You can reach them at James.t@thegamer.com Bethesda just announced a new Skyrim update, "with details to come soon." But it's not good news for PC players. Any update, however small, will break a huge chunk of mods, requiring authors to update their work to be compatible with the latest version of the game. So, when the update rolls out, modded playthroughs will be rendered completely broken. This was announced alongside a Fallout 4 update, which promises "general Creations improvements" to come on August 18 (likewise breaking mods), so it's likely that the Skyrim update will focus on the same. How To Disable Skyrim And Fallout 4 Updates Breaking entire modded playthroughs in favor of paid add-ons and the in-game mod browser is hardly a worthwhile trade, so the news isn't exactly going down well with the community. "Holy balls stop messing with Skyrim already," Reddit user claudekennilol said in a thread warning players. "Goddamnit Todd," chimed in LucasObwhy. "NOO NOT AGAIN I JUST FIXED MY MODLIST," replied That_sarcastic_bxtch. Thankfully, there are workarounds to prevent the update from being applied. Simply navigate to your 'steamapps' folder and look for 'appmanifest_489830.' Right-click the file, open attributes, and enable 'read-only.' Doing so will stop the game from auto-updating. It's a bit annoying, but once you've done it, you don't have to worry about another surprise announcement killing your mods. Of course, any mods released for the newer version of Skyrim will be incompatible, but it bides time while you wait for mod authors to update their work. You can also do this for Fallout 4 by again navigating to the 'steamapps' folder, right-clicking the 'appmanifest_377160' acf file, and setting it to read only.
