Sign in to your Simple Flying account Singapore Airlines has announced new Airbus A380 flights from Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) to Hong Kong International Airport (HKG). At four hours, the route will be its shortest using the superjumbo that traditionally flies some of the world's longest hub-to-hub routes. The change won't come into effect until winter 2027/2028. Given this gap, it isn't certain whether the A380 is just a placeholder in the schedule and could be replaced by a more appropriate aircraft. We also don't know if the services will continue after the winter period. The A380 Could Replace The Airbus A350-900 To Hong Kong On A Seasonal Basis Aero Routes data shows that the A380 will return to HKG, but only on a seasonal basis. It will operate flights SQ882/883 from December 1, 2027, to January 31, 2028. This data is preliminary and subject to change. It is also unclear whether the A380 will continue to fly this route after the period ends. The table below shows Singapore Airlines' other A380 routes for 2027 that we currently know about. Route from SIN Frequency Duration Auckland Airport (AKL) Daily Year round Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) Daily Year round Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) Daily Year round Frankfurt Airport (FRA) Daily Summer seasonal, operating from the end of March Heathrow Airport (LHR) Twice daily Year round Melbourne Airport (MEL) Daily Winter seasonal, operating until the end of March Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) Mostly daily Operating until July Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) Twice daily Year round Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) Daily Winter 2027/2028 Before the A380 arrives in Hong Kong, another service will temporarily replace the A350-900 on a flight to Hong Kong. From October 31 to November 27, 2027, Singapore Airlines will use its Boeing 777-300ERs to operate SQ874/875. Singapore Airlines Removed A380 Services To Hong Kong This Year The decision is a surprise because Singapore Airlines axed its A380 services to HKG this year. The move made sense because the relatively short route, 1,379 nautical miles (2,554 km) each way, doesn't give an A380 the chance to stretch its legs. Further reductions had been instituted before the total axing. For example, in 2025 and 2026, the A380 only served the route for two months each year: June and July in 2026. The July 2026 decision to ax the A380 routes to Hong Kong meant that the expected June and July 2027 A380 flights to HKG would not happen. Emirates would become the only carrier serving Hong Kong with A380s. Yet, Singapore Airlines left it unclear if and when the A380 would return, making these winter 2027/2028 flights possible. No Signs That Singapore Airlines' A380s Will Return To Dubai International Airport While the preliminary schedule announcement for winter 2027/2028 is a good sign for Hong Konger avgeeks, there are no signs that the same move will be made towards Dubai International Airport (DXB). This summer saw the A380 hooked from proposed services to DXB due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. At the time of the announcement, the route was unserved, with Singapore scheduled to restart it on October 25. The carrier planned to use the smaller A350-900 to reflect reduced demand. However, the airline has pushed these services back until at least February 2027, Time Out Dubai reports. Singapore Airlines originally announced in February that it would start flying A380s to DXB by the end of March. The following month, the plans were pushed back to May and then October. The announcement that came next suggested the A380 would not fly to DXB until March 2027. This confusing string of contradictory announcements shows how the aviation sector is struggling to adapt to the ongoing, fluid, and threatening situation across the Middle East region.
