With Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav both available options, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has two proven leaders to choose from, though their international commitments could ultimately decide who takes charge.Iyer currently holds the bigger claim on paper. He was appointed India's T20I captain in June, replacing Suryakumar after the latter had led India to a second successive T20 World Cup title earlier in the year. The change marked a significant shift, with Iyer taking over despite not having played a T20I since December 2023.Suryakumar, however, remains an accomplished captain in his own right. He led India in 50 completed T20Is, winning 42 of them, before the change in leadership. His Mumbai experience also makes him a natural candidate should he be available for domestic cricket.Iyer has already demonstrated his credentials with Mumbai. He captained the side to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title in 2024-25, when Mumbai beat Madhya Pradesh in the final to claim their second title in the competition. The MCA is therefore keeping both possibilities open."We have both Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav as the choice for white-ball captaincy, but it depends on their availability," a senior MCA official told PTI. That availability could be crucial. With Iyer now leading India in T20Is and Suryakumar still seeking a route back into the national side, Mumbai may have to plan around their international schedules rather than make a straightforward choice between the two.SIDDHESH LAD GETS CHANCE TO LEAD MUMBAI’S RED-BALL TEAMThe captaincy picture is clearer in red-ball cricket. Seasoned middle-order batter Siddhesh Lad has replaced Shardul Thakur as Mumbai's Ranji Trophy captain, with the move designed to manage Thakur's workload and maximise his contribution as a premier red-ball bowler.It will be Mumbai's second consecutive Ranji season with a new captain after Thakur replaced Ajinkya Rahane last season. Rahane, who retired from all forms of cricket in July, had led Mumbai to their record-extending 42nd Ranji Trophy title in 2023-24.Lad brings strong recent form into the role. He scored 774 runs in eight Ranji matches last season at an average of 77.40, including five centuries and a fifty.
