Speaking to television programme El Intermedio on September 14, Sánchez admitted authorities had been overwhelmed by the sheer number of arrivals. He said the government hoped to have the situation under control by the end of the year. It comes after bombshell declassified documents revealed that spies warned authorities about plans for a mass migrant push into Ceuta. A day before the crisis struck, intelligence chiefs had uncovered huge social media groups urging people to breach the Spanish territory. Migrants were being encouraged to swim around the border or scale its fortified fence on July 30. At least 100 people died during the crossing, according to figures from Ceuta’s mayor. Comment now
