Elections had been held on June 7 – but there was no common consensus over who should be the next leader of the country. Kosovo has already been gridlocked for much of last year after no party secured a majority in parliament. Frustrations finally boiled over when Kurti begged parliament for an extension on appointing a new president. He said: “Consultations are continuing and we have not yet reached an agreement [on the president]. Therefore, I am asking for additional time to avoid new elections.” The announcement was too much for Time Kadrijaj – who promptly reached into her bag and began pelting the acting PM. She appeared to have come prepared for the food-based rampage, even popping out from behind fellow MPs to throw the raw goods. But an unrepentant Kadrijaj posted a clip of the egg-based chaos to social media – where it quickly went viral. Tensions had been brewing for some time as the acting PM tried to reach 61 votes – the critical number needed to elect a new president. His party – which roughly translates as ‘self-determination’ – won 53 seats. The Democratic League of Kosovo secured 18 seats, while the opposition – Kosovo Democratic Party – secured 22. Kurti has been scrambling to form a coalition which will tip his majority party into power – but so far, he has had little success. New elections will be triggered if Kurti is unable to form a coalition. Under Kosovan rules, a parliament must be formed within 30 days after an election.
