Serbian Students Stage ‘Victors’ March’ to Register for Polls

Thousands of supporters of Serbia’s opposition Student List gathered on Monday evening in front of the University of Belgrade Rectorate and marched to the Republic Electoral Commission to register their candidate list, “Student List – Students Win”, for the snap parliamentary elections on October 25. Participants in what the Student List called the “Victors’ March” brought with them a replica of the Victory monument, a prominent Belgrade landmark and symbol of the city. At the weekend, people queued in cities and towns around Serbia to sign their names in support of the Student List, sometimes waiting in line for a couple of hours. Student List arose from the long-running student-led protest movement that was established after the Novi Sad railway station disaster in November 2024. It is seen as the main opposition challenger to the long rule of the Serbian Progressive Party of President Aleksandar Vucic. Vucic plans resign as head of state and campaign for the prime minister’s post in the election. “On September ‌27 ⁠I will resign as president. That evening, I will address the nation and thank people for their support,” Vucic told Pink TV on Sunday.
