Senior citizens’ welfare association plans sports competitions in Hubballi

State president of the Karnataka State Senior Citizen and Retired Employees’ Welfare Association B.A Patil briefing reporters in Hubballi on Monday. | Photo Credit: KIRAN BAKALE The Karnataka State Senior Citizen and Retired Employees’ Welfare Association has announced a series of programmes, including sports competitions and awareness activities, to mark World Senior Citizens’ Day on October 1.Addressing a press conference here on Monday, State president of the association B.A. Patil said the programmes were aimed at promoting the physical and mental well-being of senior citizens and creating awareness about their rights and welfare measures.As part of its activities, the association would organise a State-level senior citizens’ sports meet at the Nehru Stadium in Hubballi on Wednesday. Events including running, shot put, throwball, javelin throw and musical chairs will be held separately for men and women, he said.The sports meet will be inaugurated on Wednesday at 10.30 a.m. The association has also planned indoor sports competitions, including carrom, at its senior citizens’ hall on September 24.Mr. Patil said that the association had also conducted a self-employment training programme for senior citizens and would continue organising activities aimed at encouraging active and healthy ageing.Mr. Patil alleged that the government had not been implementing welfare measures for senior citizens effectively despite provisions under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.The association urged the government to give greater attention to the issues and welfare of the elderly.
