Russian Attack Halts US-Owned Oleina Sunflower Oil Plant in Dnipro

Russian strikes on Ukrainian food production infrastructure have intensified, with a Sept. 10 attack damaging the Bunge-owned vegetable oil processing plant in central Dnipro. The facility, best known for producing the Oleina sunflower oil brand, was forced to suspend operations following damage to its production site. The morning attack directly targeted part of the manufacturing complex. Global agribusiness giant Bunge confirmed that while its facilities sustained damage, no plant employees were injured. However, broader consequences of the strike in Dnipro resulted in two deaths and two injuries, according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. Responders extinguished a blaze near the facility that destroyed 12 cars and two minibuses. Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov publicly highlighted that the targeted facility belongs to an American corporation and noted that it has faced repeated attacks. This marks at least the second time the plant was struck in 2026. A previous attack in January caused approximately 300 tons of sunflower oil to spill onto city streets. “Oleina” is one of Ukraine’s most recognizable sunflower oil brands, having built over 25 years of consumer trust since its local market entry in 1998. The brand is registered in Switzerland and produced from high-quality Ukrainian sunflower seeds under the management of Bunge – a US-based global leader in agribusiness founded in 1818. Its main production site, the Dnipro Oil Extraction Plant, dates back to 1947 and was acquired by Bunge in 2002, undergoing modernizations to serve both domestic and international markets.
