Rockstar Explains How GTA 6 Handles Real World Politics

GTA 6 Will Include Political And Culture War References, But Nothing Too Specific Published Oct 5, 2026, 8:10 AM EDT Sign in to your TheGamer account Grand Theft Auto 6 is just 45 days away from release, but it's been a long journey to get here. As such, the writing team faced a unique challenge: how do you satirise American culture when you don't know what the country will look like when your game launches? Rockstar's senior vice president of narrative, Rupert Humphries, has touched on exactly that in a new interview. As spotted by VGC, Humphries explained how the team has approached real-world politics in GTA 6 in an interview with Love Magazine. The answer? Don't expect to see any real-life politicians or political events in GTA 6. Here's How Politics Will Be Handled In GTA 6 Rockstar "Because we are trying to make games that feel very specific to the moment they are released, but at the same time, not reflective of the exact world we live in, we don’t want to be too specific about any particular person, event, movement, or anything like that," Humphries tells Love Magazine. This is even more true for GTA 6, which comes 13 years after GTA 5. This means that anything they were cooking up early in development could have easily been outdated by the time of launch. With that said, Humphries acknowledges how there has to be some political references and themes, otherwise the world will not feel authentic. "Making a game in Florida, though, there is so much to work with," he says. "We have really tried to build out our world-filling it with all the characters and culture wars necessary to make it feel alive. Still, don't expect to see any real, named politicians show up: "We have so many ways to tell these stories outside of actually meeting characters face to face." So, what will we see? Humphries says that GTA 6 will have its own politics - no doubt influenced by the politics of real-life Florida - which will be shown through political campaigns taking place throughout the game. I imagine the candidates will be stand-ins for real-world US politicians, but it remains to be seen just how on the nose this all is. The hope here is that Rockstar isn't toning down its political bite in the interest of keeping everyone happy. Indeed, this is our first post-Trump Grand Theft Auto game, so there will be a lot of attention on how Rockstar has reflected this change to the US in its games, if it touches on that at all.
