And a little bit of mithai. At least that was the case for Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who was in Delhi recently. During his visit to the capital, Sunak stopped at Delhi's iconic Bengali Sweet House and Pastry Shop with his mother-in-law, author and Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty. Fellow Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal also joined them for the food stop, which involved familiar Indian snacks and a sweet finish. The highlight? Watching him happily tuck into the snacks and sweets, a familiar pleasure for anyone who has stopped by Bengali Market for “just a bite”.According to one of the posts, the group enjoyed chaat, lassi and tea, along with laddoos, gulab jamun and rasmalai. Quite the sweet little detour. Maliwal also took to social media to share glimpses of the warm meeting with the former UK Prime Minister, enjoying chaat and mithai in good company on her birthday. "Had the absolute pleasure and honour of spending a wonderful afternoon with former British Prime Minister Mr. Rishi Sunak, along with my mentor and dearest friend in Parliament, Sudha Murty ji, over some delicious Delhi chaat, rasmalai and laddoos!," she wrote in her caption. In fact, there’s plenty to make a meal of here, from chaat and chole bhature to thalis, South Indian dishes and Chinese favourites. And if you like to end on a sweet note, the mithai counter offers everything from classic Bengali sweets to dry-fruit treats, with sugar-free options too.Interestingly, this was not his first visit to the place. He had visited Bengali Sweet House ahead of Diwali in 2025. Clearly, the place had left an impression beyond the plate.Bengali Sweet House’s legacyAccording to its website, Lala Bhimsain and Lala Banwari Lal arrived from Bikaner in 1936, first setting up at the Sessions Court on Ferozshah Road before opening in Bengali Market the following year. Their idea was simple: serve street-food favourites in a setting where families could sit down and enjoy them together. Its patrons have included Bollywood celebrities such as Amitabh Bachchan, Pankaj Tripathi, Sonakshi Sinha, as well as politicians such as Shashi Tharoor, Rahul Gandhi and more.
