RG Kar case: Adhikari suspends 3 IPS officers, orders fresh probes

Suvendu Adhikari linked his government's anti-crime stance to the RG Kar case and fresh inquiries. The move widens scrutiny from the original probe to cremation, vandalism and hospital purchases.Kolkata,Oct 9, 2026 13:20 ISTWest Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday said his government had a zero-tolerance approach to crime, citing the suspension of three IPS officers over alleged mishandling and dereliction of duty in the initial phase of the probe into the RG Kar rape-murder case.He also said the state police had begun a probe into the hurried cremation of the trainee medic, and that alleged irregularities in the purchase of medical equipment for RG Kar Hospital during the previous TMC rule would also be investigated.Speaking at an event organised by the RSS-affiliated student wing ABVP at the state-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, Adhikari alleged that five days after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the institute on August 9, 2024, the then local TMC MLA "mobilised a mob that vandalised the crime scene on the instruction of the then chief minister"."The mob belonged to a community. We will bring the perpetrators to book," he alleged. Adhikari said, "The BJP government has zero tolerance towards crime. Case in point is the suspension of three senior IPS officers soon after the party came to power for their alleged mishandling and dereliction of duty during the initial phase of the probe into the R G Kar case." Former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and former deputy commissioners Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta were suspended on May 15, days after the BJP took over the reins of the state. He added, "The West Bengal Police has taken up a probe into the hurried cremation of the rape-murder victim's body. This govt will ensure justice for the family. On the request of the victim's family, the Calcutta High Court has ordered a CBI probe into it." He also said allegations of irregularities in the purchase of medical equipment for R G Kar Hospital during the previous TMC rule would be probed. In summary, Adhikari linked his government's stand on crime to action in the RG Kar case, while also alleging vandalism at the crime scene, announcing a probe into the cremation, and promising an inquiry into hospital equipment purchases during the previous regime.- Ends
