The show in question, MGM+'s The Institute, was renewed for season 2 soon after its premiere in July 2025. While its critical reception seemed lukewarm, its commercial success paved the way for its return even after it exhausted its source material. From a storytelling standpoint, The Institute is reminiscent of many popular movies and shows like Stranger Things and The X-Files. In some ways, it even reminds one of MGM+'s other horror hit, From. Its story even has elements from other Stephen King books and stories like Carrie, Firestarter, and The Dark Tower. However, as The Institute progresses and dives deeper into ideas surrounding free will and the cost of foreseeing the future, it gradually becomes evocative of Stephen King's The Dead Zone. Adapted twice for the screen, The Dead Zone delivers one of the most intriguing explorations of how precognition can be more of a curse than a blessing. The Institute treads the same path with one compelling subplot. The Institute Feels Like The Perfect Follow-Up To The Dead Zone In The Dead Zone, the main character, Johnny Smith, possesses the ability to see the future. Instead of helping him, this ability proves to be a curse as he struggles to cope with the burden of knowing what lies ahead. The Institute's storyline turns precognition into an industrialized weapon. It shows how young precogs, like Johnny Smith, foresee disastrous future events before they happen. Similar to Johnny Smith, children in The Institute are also forced to carry out covert operations in the present to ensure humanity's future is secured. Johnny Smith makes some morally questionable decisions in the present through his pre-crime interventions. The Institute expands the same idea to an even bigger scale and makes viewers question whether the end justifies the means. The Institute almost unfolds as a large-scale conspiracy thriller that expands the vision of early Stephen King works like Firestarter and The Dead Zone. The government programs and organizations in these early books that exploit and control psychic talent almost seem to reach a logical endpoint in The Institute. Owing to this, it is hard not to see The Institute as a perfect follow-up to The Dead Zone's story. The Institute Will Be More Like The Dead Zone In Season 2 In season 1, The Institute remains more fixated on the telekinetic and telepathic powers of its young characters. However, it does dedicate an entire arc to the portrayal of how these characters use their powers to carry out silent assassinations. These assassinations are orchestrated by the titular organization based on future predictions made by precogs. The Institute season 2 will likely dive deeper into its precog lore and explore how its main character, Luke, also has the ability to see the future. With this, The Institute will seemingly become more and more like The Dead Zone with its exploration of everything from the moral consequences of changing the present to create a better to the constant battle between free will and determinism. Although The Institute struggled to elevate itself above conventional sci-fi dramas in season 1, its parallels with Stephen King's The Dead Zone reveal its true potential. Hopefully, in season 2, the show will expand its vision and unfold the darker philosophical implications of its characters' supernatural abilities.
