Redox OS Switches To EEVDF-Based Scheduler For 2.6x Throughput

The Rust-written, from-scratch Redox OS operating system has switched to using an EEVDF based scheduler design. In doing so they are promoting a 2.6x increase in throughput and a 782x improvement in fairness. Akshit Gaur has been working on EEVDF for Redox OS as part of this year's Redox Summer of Code. Switching from a Deficit Weighted Round Robin (DWRR) scheduler to Earliest Eligible Virtual Deadline First (EEVDF) has resulted in some dramatic improvements for the platform. The fairness is said to be better by 782x, the throughput increased by 2.6x, and the context switching time dropped by 82%. Given these results, the developer Akshit Gaur concludes in the Redox-OS.org blog that "EEVDF was worth it!" There's now a much smoother desktop experience and all around more performant Rust operating system now with this EEVDF scheduler implementation.
