Most-played games range from Clair Obscur to Civ to Elden Ring to Halo 2 and beyond. The survival Western isn't a new category in gaming by any means, dating back as far as the iconic Oregon Trail, but you might be surprised at just how many upcoming games fit the bill on Steam and other platforms like the Epic Games Store. The combination feels particularly natural, taking the danger and isolation already associated with the frontier and adding the crafting, resource management, and base-building mechanics that have become staples of modern survival games. In that sense, Red Dead Redemption and Valheim might be unlikely bedfellows, but their respective formulas have more in common than it appears at first glance. One offers a sprawling, Western open world filled with gunslingers, wildlife, and unforgiving wilderness, while the other tasks players with gathering resources, constructing a home, and surviving whatever waits beyond its walls. Those ideas are colliding once again in an upcoming open-world survival Western headed to Steam, turning life on the frontier into something players will have to build from the ground up. Red Dead Redemption Collides With Valheim In New Release Red Rust Pioneers takes the survival formula directly to the American frontier, dropping players into Red Rust Valley in 1842, when settlements are sparse and much of the West remains untamed. Players arrive looking to leave their old lives behind and build something new, beginning with little more than a canvas tent before potentially developing their foothold into a cabin, homestead, and eventually a full ranch. The open world is designed around that gradual push westward, with players able to pack supplies into a wagon, break camp, and venture farther into the wilderness in search of resources, new territory, and hidden locations. Survival is more involved than simply keeping a food meter filled. Hunting, fishing, foraging, and farming provide essential resources, while crafting encompasses everything from cooking at a campfire to producing tools, weapons, and advancing your equipment as time goes on. The game's innovative "Equilibrium Engine" connects factors including hunger, weather, temperature, exhaustion, shelter, and preparation, while a full seasonal cycle introduces scorching summers, storms, and freezing winters that can fundamentally affect life on the frontier. Players can tackle all of this alone or with up to four players in online co-op, with groups encouraged to divide responsibilities and specialize in different roles. Building is similarly substantial, featuring log construction, foundations, porches, pitched roofs, workstations, and storage. A Pioneer's Journal also keeps track of recipes, blueprints, and seasonal information, essentially providing an expanding survival reference as players progress. Together, those systems make Red Rust Pioneers a unique entry in the genre that's actually about trying to build and sustain a life in the American West. Red Rust Pioneers Has A Free Demo Out Now Players do not have to wait for Red Rust Pioneers to launch before getting a taste of life on the frontier. A free Steam demo is available now, giving players access to the Overlook Lake portion of the world with no signup required. The developers describe it as the opening stretch of the larger experience, letting players experiment with survival, exploration, homestead building, and other core systems before the full frontier becomes available. The demo has already received substantial updates based on player feedback, including improved performance, bug fixes, and a rebuilt building interface. Overlook Lake is also considerably smaller than what is planned for the actual release. Once Red Rust Pioneers enters Early Access, players will eventually be able to venture into the much larger Red Rust Valley, where the developers are promising additional wildlife, resources, discoveries, dangers, and even bandits. An exact launch date has not yet been announced, but Steam currently lists Red Rust Pioneers for 2026, with the initial release planned for Early Access. The developers expect the game to remain there for approximately 18 to 24 months, receiving regular content updates that expand its world, crafting, building, wildlife, progression, survival systems, and broader frontier storyline before the eventual full release.
