For decades, the Jack Reacher franchise solely revolved around the overpowered titular character and his crime-solving endeavors. Characters like Neagley were only secondary players in his story who made a few recurring appearances. Especially in Lee Child's Jack Reacher books, Neagley hardly appears in a few installments. The Prime Video show, however, gave her a more important role by featuring her in Reacher's seasons 1, 2, and 3. This ultimately paved the way for her to have her own spin-off show. While there was some initial skepticism about the franchise's spin-off direction, Neagley season 1 proved all doubters wrong by doing incredibly well both critically and commercially. Only a few weeks after its premiere, Prime Video has also renewed Neagley for season 2. The show's future is incredibly exciting because in one season itself, it has brilliantly added more layers to Reacher's existing canon. It has made Neagley even more rootable as a franchise lead while paying off one of the most intimate moments from Reacher season 2's ending. Neagley's Spinoff Resolves The Character's Biggest Mystery From The Reacher Books & Show Via MovieStillsDB In Lee Child's Jack Reacher books, it was established early that Neagley has an aversion to touch (Haphephobia). The books even feature a scene in which another character asks Reacher the reason behind Neagley's Haphephobia. Instead of drawing assumptions, Reacher simply says she was born with the condition. Instead of rewriting these details from the books, Reacher's Neagley spin-off cleverly reveals the truth about Neagley's Haphephobia. It reveals how Neagley, too, believed that she always had an aversion to touch. However, when she finds childhood pictures of herself, she notices how she used to be okay with physical contact. This sets the stage for her to find the truth. As Neagley gets to the bottom of this childhood mystery, she learns that she watched her father kill another man when she was a child. Her father was a police officer who had taken justice into his own hands to punish a man for sexually abusing a child. However, since Neagley could not understand his true motives, she was traumatized by the incident, which manifested in the form of Haphephobia. With this, the Neagley spin-off finally resolves one of the biggest mysteries surrounding the Maria Sten character. For long, Reacher canon treated her Haphephobia as an unexplained condition she has always had. In Neagley season 1's ending moments, though, she understands the origins of her condition, which allows her to gradually heal herself. Neagley's Spinoff Story Pays Off One Of Reacher's Best Scenes Neagley has a relatively smaller role in Reacher seasons 1 and 3. In season 2, however, viewers get a good glimpse of everything from her genius deductive abilities to how much she values her platonic relationship with Reacher. The season ends with an emotional scene where Neagley bids farewell to Reacher as he sets out to continue his travels across the USA. Since Neagley avoids physical touch, she merely raises her hand and almost makes a touching gesture. Reacher does the same, perfectly capturing how the two share a unique bond where they respect each other's boundaries and lifestyle choices. She even reminds Reacher that she and the other former Special Investigators are his family. Neagley's spin-off perfectly pays this off by showing how Neagley decides to shake Reacher's hand when she takes the first step towards healing from her trauma. The scene captures how she considers him family and feels comfortable taking that first step around someone she feels completely safe with. The Neagley sequence serves as a perfect parallel to Reacher season 2's ending, where Neagley reminds Reacher that she trusts him more than anyone else, while Reacher is quick to understand the meaning behind her vulnerable gesture.
