Rand Paul says he doesn’t understand the buzz over Mitch McConnell’s health

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said he doesn’t understand why people are chomping at the bit for more details about the state of Sen. Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) health.McConnell has been at the center of the political spotlight in Kentucky over the past several months since he was hospitalized in mid-June following a fall. The Kentucky political titan was recently released from a physical rehabilitation facility to recover at his own home. However, speculation ran rampant online as Democrats and Kentuckians asked for more information on the state of his health.“I’m not sure I understand it,” Paul told local reporters this week. “To tell you the truth, he announced a year ago he wasn’t running. Everybody knows that he’s gotten older. He’s had some falls and had some things. And anyone who has a relative that’s gotten older, it happens to all of us.” “I don’t know why people are (clamoring) for more details,” Paul said Tuesday, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.Gov. Andy Beshear (D-KY), the red state’s blue governor who is eyeing a possible 2028 presidential run, has been at the helm of calls for more information from McConnell’s office. He has called on McConnell multiple times to film a live video for the people of the Bluegrass State as a check-in of sorts, telling CBS News’s Face the Nation on Sunday, “all he needs to do is call into this show for two minutes, or Fox News for two minutes, or do a video for two minutes to the people he’s supposed to serve.”“I have heard absolutely nothing back from Mitch McConnell,” Beshear said. “And while I do hope that he is getting better, I’ve known him my entire life, I wish him no harm, I actually wish him good health; his boss are the people of Kentucky.”Beshear’s stance has put him at public odds with Paul, who has questioned the governor’s motives for pushing hard on the topic. In response to Beshear’s letters urging McConnell’s office for evidence of the senior senator’s “capacity to serve,” Paul accused the governor of trying “to look relevant.”“It’s a campaign ploy by Beshear to look relevant,” Paul said. “He wants to jump in; there’s a lot of news over how Senator McConnell’s doing. And so, to appear relevant, he’s putting out inflammatory statements.”Beshear fired back at Paul in late July.“It’s a campaign ploy to say someone should have a three-minute interview?” Beshear told CNN. “My goodness, is that too much for Rand Paul? Because I see him jumping in front of every camera he can find.”Both Beshear and Paul are seen as possible contenders for a 2028 presidential run.McConnell last issued a public statement on his health on Aug. 6, saying he will “maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period” and will “continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business.”BESHEAR SAYS ‘I’VE HEARD NOTHING’ FROM MCCONNELL, URGES SENATOR TO ‘CALL IN’“Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home,” McConnell said. “Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff.”McConnell announced his retirement from the upper chamber in early 2025, for the end of his term in 2027. Rep. Andy Barr (R-KY) is seen as the favorite in the general election race against Democrat Charles Booker to replace McConnell.
