(Photo: Windy)New Delhi,Oct 8, 2026 19:30 ISTIndia is set for a mixed weather pattern on October 9, with rain and thunderstorms expected across several parts of the country even as the Southwest Monsoon continues its retreat.According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), conditions are becoming favourable for the further withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon from more parts of eastern India, the northern Peninsula and several areas of northeast India over the next three to four days.The monsoon has already withdrawn from the remaining parts of Maharashtra, some parts of Goa, Karnataka, Telangana and Odisha, as well as more areas of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh as of October 8.However, its withdrawal will not mean an immediate end to rainfall. Heavy rain likely in UttarakhandFor October 9, isolated heavy rainfall is forecast over Uttarakhand, with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds also possible.The IMD has forecast scattered rainfall across Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab during October 8-14. West Uttar Pradesh is likely to see isolated to scattered rainfall through October 11, while East Uttar Pradesh could receive rain through October 10. A fresh Western Disturbance is also present as a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan and adjoining areas. This system could contribute to changing weather over the northwestern region.South India remains wetThe strongest rainfall activity on October 9 is expected over parts of southern India.The IMD has warned of isolated heavy rainfall over South Interior Karnataka, while Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are expected to receive heavy rain as part of a broader spell continuing through October 10.Kerala and Mahe are likely to see fairly widespread to widespread rainfall, while thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are possible over Kerala, Tamil Nadu and adjoining areas.South Interior Karnataka could also experience thunderstorms and lightning on October 9-10.The weather activity is being supported by a combination of upper-air circulations and troughs extending from the southeast Arabian.East and Northeast continue to see rainBihar is likely to receive isolated to scattered rainfall through October 11, while Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand could also see rain on October 9-10.Odisha is expected to remain under a prolonged spell of scattered rainfall through October 14.Northeast India will also remain unsettled, with rainfall expected over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya and the northeastern states.The IMD said 7-11 cm of heavy rain was already recorded during the 24 hours ending 8:30 am on October 8 in parts of Uttarakhand, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand and East Uttar Pradesh.Meanwhile, hot and humid conditions are likely to persist over Konkan and Goa through October 10.The IMD's latest update therefore points to a clear transition: the monsoon is retreating, but India's weather is far from turning uniformly dry.- Ends
