It comes as prime minister Andy Burnham renewed Britain’s pledge to aid Ukraine – and promised to send more British drones into battle. The move has enraged Putin and his cronies, with state TV presenter Vladimir Solovyov threatening: “Give the British three days to learn to breathe underwater, then hit them with Poseidon.” Ominously, the Russian embassy warned that the more Britain helped Ukraine, “the higher the price it will pay”. Burnham has ignored the warning and insisted that Britain is not a “fairweather friend”. The incredible claim has not been independently verified. The missiles – named after the powerful Greek god of the sea – were first developed in 2002. Former president Dmitry Medvedev dubbed them a true “doomsday weapon” with Russian journalists claiming they could “drown Britain”. Though the claims remain unproven, analysts point out that the devastation could still be significant. Coastal cities could be decimated and water and land contaminated. Military expert Dr Richard Connolly told the Telegraph that Mad Vlad was merely using the Poseidon sub for propaganda – and had no intention of striking Britian. “If they were to do what the Russian TV presenters are proposing, they’d face retaliation from Britain’s Trident nuclear deterrent”, Connolly explained. “So they wouldn’t do it, because they know they’d pay a price”, he reasoned. The analyst, who is an associate fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (Rusi) military think tank, calls the Poseidon missiles a “boutique” weapon because they are only produced in small numbers. Nonetheless, the threat posed by the nuclear warheads may be enough to spur big spending from NATO. “We’re in a very dangerous position at the moment,” says Connolly. “We may disagree with Russia and its security architecture. But it’s a different thing to say you’ve got to just keep escalating. “You’d be spending an enormous amount of money to counter something that will only be used when you’re already in a nuclear war,” he pointed out. “And, you know – it’s not like we’ll be around anyway.” 1 comment1
