Process of identifying land for establishing dry port begins in Tiruchi

The Department of Revenue has begun the process of identifying the land to set up an inland container depot, also referred to as a multi-modal logistics hub or dry port in Tiruchi.Taking into account the persistent demands of the local industry and Tiruchi MP Durai Vaiko, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay recently announced in the State Assembly that the State government would soon carry out a detailed study on establishing a multi-modal logistics hub in Tiruchi.The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) has been tasked with the job of preparing the Detailed Project Report. The facility is expected to have container handling, warehousing, cold chain, and temperature-controlled facilities, terminals, cargo consolidation and distribution hubs, and customs clearance. The infrastructure is expected to benefit the trade and industry in the region.The revenue officials here have begun the process of identifying suitable land to set up the facility. They have been looking for 15 acres to 20 acres of land ideally on the national highways so as to have easy access.Official sources told The Hindu that a piece of land at Small Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) industrial park near Manapparai on the Tiruchi-Dindigul Highway and another piece of land at Tiruverumbur, where a number of manufacturing units were functioning, had been shortlisted. There was a discussion on selecting a piece of land at Panjapur on Tiruchi-Madurai Highway. Of them, chances were bright for choosing a piece of land at SIPCOT park.Sources said about 30 companies had been allotted land at SIPCOT park. Some of them had begun production. The park still had vacant plots. According to a preliminary study, it was found suitable for establishing a dry port. It had excellent connectivity with all leading highways, the airport, and to the railway station. It was under consideration. However, a final decision was yet to be taken.
