Pro-Palestinian protester booed at Yankee Stadium after running onto field on 9/11 anniversary

A man waving a Palestinian flag was booed by the crowd at Yankee Stadium on Friday night after he ran onto the field at precisely 9:11 p.m. on the anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks.Loud boos could be heard echoing through the stadium as security tackled and detained the man in center field after he jumped over the fence from the left-field seats, according to videos on social media. The crowd erupted into chants of “USA” as security removed him from the field.The timely disruption came on the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and after a day of ceremonies in the city. Commemorative events featuring the families of 9/11 victims were attended by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and former President George Bush. Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani drew the ire of Republicans for seemingly laughing while victims’ names were being read off at the event after a week in which the mayor’s ties to anti-Israel politics were under heightened scrutiny. Debates over Mamdani’s ties to left-wing internet personality Hasan Piker, who has said America deserved the terrorist attacks, dominated much of the lead-up to Friday’s ceremonies. The tie between the conflict in Gaza and 9/11 has surfaced prominently in the Michigan Senate race between Abdul el Sayed and Mike Rogers, as el Sayed chose to campaign alongside Piker throughout the summer.The New York Police Department said on Saturday the man had been identified as Kelly Marcucci of Long Island, according to the Athletic. Police said he was taken into custody on a misdemeanor charge of interfering with a professional sporting event and a trespassing violation for allegedly storming onto the field.
