Sign in to your ScreenRant account Over two decades after its release, Firefly remains one of the greatest and most memorable space operas ever created. The sci-fi show subverted many genre tropes of its time and masterfully captured the social dynamics between the central crew members of Serenity. Unfortunately, despite showing immense potential, the show was canceled after just one season. Most one-season wonders are gradually forgotten with time. Viewers feel disheartened by their premature endings for a while, but eventually move on to other worthy replacements. The fact that Firefly is still so heavily talked about highlights how it was light years ahead of its time and still deserves a second chance to complete what it started. Reports suggest that an animated Firefly reboot could happen in the near future. For now, though, the sci-fi franchise's future seems uncertain. Viewers who miss Firefly and its incredibly well-written character beats can fill the void the space opera left behind by checking out another sci-fi epic that lasted for 6 seasons. The Expanse Had Sci-Fi's Best Crew Dynamics Since Firefly Firefly truly thrives when it puts the witty banter and charm of its central crew on full display. While The Expanse on Prime Video is far grittier and ambitious than Firefly when it comes to its sci-fi elements, the show's appeal also lies in its portrayal of the dynamics between its central crew. Unlike Firefly, The Expanse adopts a more serious tone as it navigates geopolitics across the solar system. Similar to Firefly, though, it does an incredible job of gradually setting up that "found family" tie between the crew members of the Rocinante. They all just happen to be together in the beginning without having the choice to be with one another. However, as the show progresses, they slowly start trusting one another as they realize they are bound by the same trauma and desire to survive. For the most part of its runtime, Firefly is primarily driven by the central crew dynamics. In The Expanse's grand sci-fi vision, the Rocinante becomes more of a reflection of the larger themes at play. Holden (Earth), Naomi and Amos (Belters), and Alex (Mars) bring generations of political biases, prejudice, and conflicts into every decision they are forced to make as a crew. Instead of merely confining the characters into space opera tropes, The Expanse also keeps adding new layers of psychological depth to the central crew as it progresses. For instance, a character like Amos initially seems to carry himself with a tough exterior, but it eventually becomes evident that he heavily relies on Holden and Naomi to help him navigate morally complex decisions. Both Finished Early, But The Expanse Had A More Definitive Conclusion Than Firefly Like Firefly, The Expanse also faced the threat of early cancellation after three seasons. Despite earning wide acclaim from viewers and critics, the show was axed by Syfy. Fortunately, for The Expanse, it earned a second chance when Amazon picked it up, allowing it to last for three more seasons. However, even though The Expanse had a long 6-season run, it never covered the full length of its source material. It stopped right before the source material's story takes a massive time jump, which made its ending seem fairly conclusive. Even though The Expanse, like Firefly, left viewers with many unanswered questions and unresolved arcs, it is hard not to appreciate how it at least got a semblance of a conclusion and got to last for six seasons. Since Firefly was an original series, it probably would have completed its run in six seasons. Hopefully, in the near future, Firefly will get the opportunity to finish what it started through a potential reboot or even a direct continuation.
