Prime Video's rival series to The Rookie has officially been resurrected from the dead on streaming, taking off in brand-new ways. Prime Video has a plethora of TV shows in the crime genre, all of which have found their footing in one way or another. From the action-packed thrills found in every season of Reacher, to the more procedural detective angle found in Cross, there are plenty of shows on the platform that have proven themselves standouts in the genre for different reasons. One such series is On Call, a police procedural executive produced by Dick Wolf and co-created by his son, Elliot Wolf, and Tim Walsh. The show follows officers of the Long Island Police Department as they deal with various emergency calls, mostly centered around senior training officer Traci Harmon and her rookie, Alex Diaz. In addition to new cases every episode, the show also centers around the pair uncovering the truth behind a fellow officer's mysterious death. The eight-episode first season was released in full on January 9, 2025 on Prime Video. On Call Is Back As A Prime Video Streaming Hit Now, over a year after its release, On Call has returned to Prime Video's Top 10 on streaming, proving itself a major hit. According to data from October 6, 2026, On Call is Number 10 on Prime Video in the United States. Its sneaky climb into the Top 10 comes ahead of the return of multiple network TV shows involving Dick Wolf, including the Law & Order, One Chicago, and FBI universes. While the series is quite different, it's still managed to draw plenty of audience attention, especially, it seems, in the Fall of 2026. The show has drawn some comparisons to The Rookie because of its format, though the ABC series focuses on a wider cast of main trainee-rookie pairings. Reviews for On Call have, overall, been polarizing. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave the show a 55% based on 20 reviews. However, audiences found more favor with its approach to the police procedural genre, ranking it a 91% based on over 250 ratings. It's clear from the popularity on Prime Video today that the series continues to resonate long after its release. Will The Dick Wolf Series Return? Unfortunately, the future of On Call is uncertain. In May 2025, Prime Video cancelled the drama after one season due to a cost-plus contract Wolf Entertainment wasn't able to afford. This comes despite Prime Video initially being interested in ordering both seasons 2 and 3 at the same time, negotiations ultimately falling to the wayside. However, hope isn't lost for the series, as the Wolfs have been pitching the series to other streaming platforms, including Peacock. As of writing, however, On Call season 2 hasn't been confirmed. In addition, series star Brandon Larracuente, who plays Diaz, was cast in a main role on Chicago Fire season 14. While it doesn't mean On Call won't return, it's clear he's open to other TV shows. This doesn't mean hope is lost, though, as it's clear the show has caught on with viewers even almost two years after its original airing. It's a good sign for the series as a whole, even if it doesn't guarantee its future return.
