While it was nice to see everyone again, and exhilarating to go on another high-stakes adventure with Jack, it did require the producers to undo the finality of the series. In its season 4 finale, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan had already reached the perfect conclusion. But in order to bring it back for a movie, and give that movie some conflict, they had to undo the happy ending of the TV show. This is a common occurrence with franchise revivals. Audiences want to see their favorite characters again, so the studio greenlights a reboot, and then the writers have to figure out a way to keep the story going after its natural conclusion. The Star Wars sequel trilogy revealed that Han and Leia are divorced and estranged from their son. The Entourage movie revealed that Vincent Chase’s supposed true love was actually more of a brief fling. Daredevil: Born Again had Foggy Nelson murdered in its opening scene. Amazon’s Jack Ryan movie, Ghost War, fell into that same trap. The ending of the series had already wrapped up Ryan’s story in a neat bow — and particularly his relationship with Cathy — so it was pretty disappointing when the spinoff film immediately reversed that dramatic payoff. Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War Made The Wrong Choice By Undoing Cathy's Ending The series finale of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan ended with Jack withstanding ruthless torture, getting rescued by his team, uncovering Zeyara’s nefarious plan, and exposing Senator Henshaw’s ties to the whole shady operation. That wrapped up the plot — the external conflicts — but it still left the internal conflicts unresolved. Jack was still a workaholic who needed a better work-life balance. After finally defeating Zeyara, Jack decided to take a break from his spy work and start a peaceful life with Cathy. This seemed to suggest that he was retiring from the field, hanging up his calculator, and settling down with the love of his life. It was the perfect ending to Jack’s story; it got him out of harm’s way and allowed him to retire with some semblance of normalcy and stability in his life. But when Amazon greenlit a movie, the writers had to get Jack back in action. They couldn’t make Ghost War a whole feature-length film about a guy hanging around the house with his adoring wife. So, Ghost War had Jack and Cathy break up off-screen in between the end of the series and the start of the movie, so it was like their happy ending in season 4 never happened. Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan Pulled The Same Cathy Stunt In Season 2 This isn’t the first time that Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan has done this with the Cathy character. She randomly disappeared after season 1, too. After the first season had built up a great rapport between Jack and Cathy, and forged an interesting relationship between these characters, she suddenly vanished from the series. She was nowhere to be seen in seasons 2 and 3, and it seemed as though she might never return (like Olivia Cooke in Slow Horses). Then, of course, she came back in season 4 so that Jack could get a happy ending. But then, once again, she was written out of the series and forgotten about. The fact that Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan already did this to Cathy after season 1 makes Ghost War’s retcon feel even lazier. In another couple of years, we might get another Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan movie. Ghost War’s ending wasn’t as definitive as the TV show’s ending; it gave Jack a hefty promotion, leaving the door open for more adventures in the future, so I’m sure we’ll be having this conversation again soon enough.
