Sign in to your ScreenRant account In October 1993, a little over a month after Mighty Morphin Power Rangers premiered, Jason David Frank’s Tommy Oliver was introduced as the Green Ranger. Initially a brainwashed adversary of the other Rangers, he was eventually freed from Rita Repulsa’s control and joined Jason, Trini, Zack, Billy, and Kimberly in their fight against evil. Frank reprised Tommy in multiple other Power Rangers projects over the next 25 years and donned other Ranger colors, making him arguably the franchise’s most popular character. While Frank played Tommy for the final time in the Super Ninja Steel episode “Dimensions in Danger,” alternate versions of the character have been featured in various Boom! Studios comic book series. Currently, an older, more grizzled Tommy is being followed in the Power Rangers: Green. Additionally, the relaunched Mighty Morphin Power Rangers title, written by Marguerite Bennett and illustrated by Andrew Lee Griffith, has brought its younger Tommy back. Tommy Oliver Has Returned In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Power Rangers (Volume 3) #4, Written By Marguerite Bennett, Art By Andrew Lee Griffith Boom! Studios The current volume of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers sees the title superhero team reforming 10 years after they originally disbanded, as an evil witch named Rita Rabiosa has emerged from another realm to wreak havoc on Earth. However, Tommy did not respond to Billy’s call back to action, with the character only being shown in a mysterious alien jungle. None of his old teammates knew his whereabouts, so the original five Power Rangers had to engage with this new threat without him. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #4 shows Kimberly and Billy going on a double date together. Unfortunately, the Pink and Blue Rangers are figuratively and literally catfished, as their respective dates, Roy and Regina, end up being King and Queen Catfish, two of Rita’s minions. After the Rangers defeat these monsters, they regroup back at Kimberly’s house to talk about their past first dates. At serendipitous timing, there’s a knock on the door, and Kimberly answers it to find Tommy on the other side with a stern expression and carrying a duffel bag. What’s Ahead For Tommy In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers? Boom! Studios Tommy’s return is shown on the last page of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers #4, leaving the mystery of where he’s been to be solved in future issues. However, several details about what’s in store for the character have been revealed from Boom! Studios' solicitations and artwork. For one thing, just like the other Rangers, Tommy is getting a brand-new Green Ranger suit. It’s unclear if he still has access to his White Ranger powers. Issue #5’s solicitation notes that Tommy “wants the chance to explain his absent past,” while in Issue #6, Tommy’s return will lead to Jason, the Red Ranger, “questioning his ability as a leader and whether he should have made more of himself.” Then in Issue #7, Tommy will figure out how why his teammates are stuck in their Zord forms and how to switch them back. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is currently the only property’s ongoing title, as Power Rangers: Green and Power Rangers Unlimited will end after five and 12 issues, respectively. Finally, when these three comic book series were announced by Entertainment Weekly, it was teased that what’s happening with Tommy “in the periphery” of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will also “impact the future glimpsed in Power Rangers: Green.” While this indicates that these are the same two versions of Tommy, what remains to be seen is if the Mighty Morphin Tommy is destined to become the Green Tommy no matter what, or if that’s just one potential future that awaits him. Power Rangers: Green takes place in a post-apocalyptic landscape over a century in the future, when the much-older, "Last Ranger" Tommy comes out of retirement and teams up with Goldar to battle The Unmade, daughter of Scopina. That series is written and illustrated by Pallie Paul Allor and Gustaffo Vargas, respectively. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #4 is now available from Boom! Studios.
