London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed Saturday that Meghan Markle was sent a bombshell letter containing disturbing allegations of child sexual abuse against her estranged father, Thomas Markle Sr. Scotland Yard admitted that the letter, which accused Thomas Sr. of sexually abusing a child, was passed along to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s office in January 2019 — but the allegations were never shared with other law enforcement agencies, according to the Sun. “Following a thorough review of Met Police systems and records, we have confirmed that in January 2019, we received a letter containing a number of claims about alleged offending outside the United Kingdom,” a police spokesperson said. Police are now reviewing how the matter was handled and considering whether to refer it to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. Channel 5 The letter accused Thomas Sr. (pictured in July 2021) of sexually abusing a child, according to the Sun. BACKGRID The Sun previously reported that it obtained a copy of the letter, which alleged Thomas Sr., 82, had sexually abused a child. The unidentified author also claimed that Meghan’s father had admitted traveling to the Philippines and Thailand to abuse children. The allegations have not been substantiated. The police confirmation comes after Meghan, 45, revealed Friday that she had been made aware of “troubling and disturbing” allegations against her father years earlier. “In 2018, a letter was sent to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection. That letter was subsequently shared with me,” she said in a statement. The unidentified author also alleged that Thomas Sr. (pictured in the Philippines in 2025) admitted traveling to Thailand and the Philippines to abuse children. Karl Larsen / BACKGRID The duchess claimed she was assured the accusations were being investigated and explained that her estrangement from her father was intended to protect her children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5. A spokesperson for the Sussexes later acknowledged to the Sun the discrepancy between Meghan’s recollection of the letter arriving in 2018 and police records showing it was received in January 2019. “In recalling events from more than seven years ago, without the benefit of a diary entry or contemporaneous record, it is understandable that she may have been mistaken by a few months,” they said. “If the MPS holds a time-stamped record confirming that the letter was reviewed in 2019, that should be treated as the accurate reference point for when it was received and shared with the Duchess.” Want more celebrity and pop culture news?
