Pokémon's Official Gengar Redesign Is The Perfect 30th Anniversary Celebration

Published Nov 7, 2026, 3:00 PM EST Known as 'Cyberpunk 2077's' biggest fan, Angharad is a Welsh games writer who thrives in anything related to digital storytelling. If a video game explores the intricacies and horrors of womanhood, she is there. Thanks to previous work at GAMINGbible, GameByte, The Loadout, Game Luster, Angharad has built a strong understanding of both the digital world and what fans want from it and is eager to share her thoughts and expertise with readers. It has been 30 years since Gengar was first introduced as part of the very first 'mon lineup in 1996's Pokémon Red & Green. Since then, the dual-type Ghost and Poison Pokémon has become one of the most recognizable faces not just in the Nintendo series, but in gaming as a whole, thanks to their purple and red appearance and comical grimace. Now appearing in almost every mainline Pokémon entry, as well as a number of spin-offs, Gengar is set to receive a makeover after 30 years, and it all comes courtesy of ongoing celebrations. As we already know, 30th anniversary celebrations have been taking place throughout the year, with the most notable release being the Pokémon Trading Card Game: 30th Celebration pack. Launching back in September, it featured five foil cards (guaranteeing one of 30 unique Pikachu rare card illustrations) and one foil Basic Energy card. However, it seems as though that is not the only major release to look forward to, as the fashionistas amongst you may want to check out the brand-new Pokémon x adidas collaboration. The Pokémon x adidas 30th Anniversary collection features multiple character-themed sneakers and apparel, with designs dedicated to Pikachu, Charizard, Charmander & Charmeleon, Mewtwo, Rayquaza & Ghost-types, and most importantly, Gengar. Ranging from $110 to $180, these sneakers can be found in all major sneaker retailers, or the Official adidas Pokémon Store. The Gengar-inspired design belongs to the Pokémon x adidas Adistar XLG 2.0 Gengar pair and, as you can probably imagine, it comes with a very purple color scheme with red accents. As the official item description reads: Born from the shadows of gaming nostalgia and streetwear evolution, the Pokémon x adidas Adistar XLG 2.0 "Gengar" channels the ghostly energy of one of the franchise's most iconic characters. Deep purple tones sweep across the performance-driven silhouette, while character artwork on the tongue brings mischievous spirit to every stride. This collaboration doesn't just celebrate three decades of Pokémon, it fuses them into the bones of adidas' performance heritage. Poké Ball lace dubraes and bespoke overlays mark the union of two worlds, where eerie aesthetics meet technical design. The Adistar XLG 2.0 becomes more than a sneaker, it's a wearable piece of gaming history with street-ready swagger. Released back in September, they are still available to order, but that is not all. If you are a Pokémon GO player and want to get your hands on a pair of these exclusive sneakers, you can head to your local adidas store to unlock in-game Timed Research for an avatar jacket and cap by 15 January 2027. As the most popular pair of sneakers in the whole collaboration, it is worth mentioning that the Pokémon x adidas Adistar XLG 2.0 Gengar often sells out, so it is worth baring this in mind before heading to your local store. However, over on r/adidas, it seems as though these Gengar-themed sneakers have a fair few fans. "Very cool! If I see anyone wearing these out and about, I’m complimenting them," one user said. Another agreed, adding, "I managed to get them for the UK store before they restricted discounts! I like them and the box is the best I've seen out of them."
