Inarguably, some of the greatest Pokémon games of all time are HeartGold and SoulSilver. These two remakes completely revamped the original Gold and Silver experience, delivering a series high with stunning visuals, enhanced gameplay, and a bevy of other quality-of-life features. They were the defining Pokémon DS games, and remain, to this day, the gold standard in many respects. They were also, aside from the original Gold and Silver, the only Pokémon games to feature two distinct regions in one: Johto and Kanto. While we've seen Johto revisited in recent Pokémon games made by fans, we're yet to truly revisit Kanto, the iconic region from Red and Blue, their various remakes, and, of course, Gold and Silver. Fortunately, an upcoming Pokémon game is finally taking fans back to Kanto, only this time with a brand-new story set 50 years after the events of Gold and Silver. It's a bold new take, one that promises to take Pokémon in a whole new direction, and one that fans will want to check out. While there are countless Pokémon regions that should be revisited, Kanto feels like an obvious choice, especially given it was the very first one featured in the game series. Evidently, this was the same thinking behind the aforementioned upcoming Pokémon game, which takes players back to the region, only 50 years later in 2049. The futuristic setting, however, isn't as one would expect from a Pokémon game, as it's now a dark and decayed place, one haunted both metaphorically and literally by ghosts, and left to rot after the events of Gold and Silver. The game in question is Pokémon: Ghost Grey, a brand-new Pokémon fan game from developer Joey Zeed. It offers a full-length Pokémon adventure with a new story that utilizes the original Gold and Silver aesthetic with a brand-new soundtrack (featuring 130 original songs), over 200 Ghost-type Pokémon (120 of which are original new variant designs), a graphical overhaul including new animations, brand-new areas to explore, improved Pokédex entries, updated mechanics to match the modern games, and so much more. This truly ambitious Pokémon fan game is frankly astounding, and the best part is that it's available to download and play right now. It can be downloaded via its official Hackdex page and then applied to a legally obtained ROM of Pokémon FireRed. It's worth mentioning that Pokemon: Ghost Grey is a horror-focused title, one with a more mature narrative and grittier story elements that aren't really appropriate for children. This is, however, great for fans looking for a completely unique Pokémon experience that improves upon Game Freak's limited storytelling capabilities. It is amazing to see the Pokémon community continue to deliver not only excellent fan games, but also ones that are completely transformative, offering distinct and memorable experiences that build upon the existing Pokémon formula. Ghost Grey will almost certainly join the pantheon of great Pokémon fan games and become a staple for anyone looking for a brand-new Pokémon adventure with a twist.
