Pokémon, every so often, veers into the realm of horror, delivering spooky stories that, while still appealing to children, can send a shiver down even the most hardened of horror fans. With its vast array of Ghost-type Pokémon, terrifying towers of the dead, and nightmare scenarios with a handful of its villains, Pokémon certainly can scare its players when it wants to. Sadly, it never really seems to want to, beyond the handful of aforementioned examples, opting instead to play it rather safe. Fortunately, a brand-new Pokémon RPG is changing that rather drastically by amping up the horror to 11. Ditching the pretense that Pokémon is for kids, Ghost Grey looks to offer a haunting new experience for players to enjoy set 50 years after the events of Gold and Silver. Delivering a mature narrative, new regional variants of existing Ghost-types, and so much more, Ghost Grey is the ideal Pokémon game for those who've been hoping the series would get a little spooky now and then. Pokémon Ghost Grey Looks Very Spooky Pokémon Ghost Grey is the latest in a long line of phenomenal Pokémon ROM hacks that completely transforms the base Gold and Silver into an all-new, spooky adventure, set, as abovementioned, 50 years after those games. It imagines that Kanto, in 2049, has fallen into ruin, now overrun by ghosts and those seeking to capitalize on the carnage and chaos for their own malicious needs. Featuring a full-length narrative completed with new characters, twists, turns, and dialogue, Pokémon Ghost Grey is ostensibly a brand-new game in the series, albeit made by fans. It is inspired by the Creepypastas of the early 2000s, the atmospheric, somewhat edgy, utterly morose, and unrelentingly bleak horror stories that would burrow into your adolescent mind and stay there through sleepless night after sleepless night. Pokémon Ghost Grey hopes to borrow a little of that energy for its original story, something its trailer showcases in spades. Of course, it isn't just the narrative that's changed with this ROM hack, as there are also several gameplay improvements in Ghost Grey. Pokémon Ghost Grey adds 200 Ghost-type Pokémon into the Kanto region, 120 of which are brand-new regional variants of existing 'mons, as well as a complete graphical overhaul of the original Gold and Silver style, including new animations. There's entire new areas, a redesigned overworld, an entirely new soundtrack featuring 130 new songs, redone sprites for all assets, quality-of-life improvements, and parity with recent Pokémon games to ensure it appeals to modern sensibilities. Ostensibly, Pokémon Ghost Grey is the ultimate horror Pokémon game, and you can download it right now. Pokémon Needs More Horror Those interested in downloading Pokémon Ghost Grey can do so via its official Hackdex page. You'll need a legally obtained ROM of Pokémon FireRed in order for it to work, as this is a patch for said ROM. It is absolutely worth downloading, if only to see just how well the horror genre works within the Pokémon framework. Indeed, any form of slightly more mature or complex storytelling flourishes when combined with Pokémon's unique JRPG structure, something that Game Freak has been unwilling to experiment with. Pokémon Ghost Grey, among the many other story-focused Pokémon ROM hacks, illustrates not just a hunger for more narrative-based Pokémon games, but also a clear indication that this series can also deliver emotionally charged and cinematic narratives much like its JRPG contemporaries. Hopefully, Game Freak will one day experiment a little more with narrative, either veering into other genres like horror, or simply offering up something more exciting than the typical Pokémon fare.
