Around the corner is the first PlayStation State of Play showcase to premiere since it was announced that the production of discs and the support for physical video game media would cease by the start of 2028, and PlayStation has understandably been soaking in that incredibly hot water lately. Of course, this doesn’t mean fans will have nothing to look forward to at the September 2026 PlayStation State of Play, which will technically be two back-to-back broadcasts—one being a more traditional PlayStation State of Play showcase with updates from and announcements from PlayStation Studios and third-party studios, and the other being dedicated to “upcoming games from creators in Japan and Asia.” Airing on September 3, the only game that we have confirmation about appearing so far is Final Fantasy VII Revelation, though there’s also a high likelihood that there’ll be a trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine and any other PlayStation games being released this fall, such as Silent Hill: Townfall. Unless it shows up somewhere soon, fans might otherwise be forced to reconcile with the possibility that it may not exist. 4 The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King Remaster Aspyr burst a dam, released a river, and flooded Isengard when it shadow-dropped its Lord of the Rings: War in the North remaster, dubbed The Lord of the Rings: War in the North - Legacy Edition, and explicitly teased that this is only the beginning: “Fans can look forward to even more classic releases by Aspyr from the beloved franchise in the future!” Knowing that other classic Lord of the Rings games are in line to receive a remaster, Aspyr must be wholly cognizant about fans’ undying adoration for the movie tie-in video game adaptation of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, which was released one month before the movie. As such, Aspyr could milk fans’ desire for a remaster of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King by announcing or shadow-dropping it at the September 2026 PlayStation State of Play. This huge, hearty helping of nostalgia would unironically be many fans’ highlight of the showcase, no matter what else was revealed before or after it. Nevertheless, there are plenty of Lord of the Rings games that may or may not be considered to qualify for a remaster from Aspyr, and seeing anything related to The Lord of the Rings this week would be a wonderful boon for the franchise. If remasters are what it takes to pave over The Lord of the Rings: Gollum’s pothole, so be it. Likewise, it’s probably going to be years before Warhorse’s open-world Middle-earth RPG resurfaces, and fans are lucky to be receiving remasters of cherished Lord of the Rings games in the first place. 3 Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet It wasn’t long ago that it felt futile to hope for or expect Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet to appear anywhere any time soon. That said, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet recently received an official update from Naughty Dog stating that filming has been completed for the game’s cinematics, suggesting that it may not be much longer until we have a release date or window, much less any substantial marketing. Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet’s announcement trailer premiered at The Game Awards 2024. And, now that Naughty Dog’s new nostalgia-infused sci-fi epic has been revealed, it might not be withholding itself for such gargantuan events anymore. It has almost been two years since Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet was revealed, though it feels like much longer. Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet making an appearance this week isn’t a far-fetched prediction, anyway, as many of the same rumors claiming there would be a PlayStation State of Play this month before it was officially confirmed soon thereafter also claimed that the game would be there. But, to be fair, it’s possible Naughty Dog isn’t prepared to reveal gameplay or a new trailer, with PlayStation’s first-party studio writing that we’ll see more “when the time is right.” Whether that’s during a PlayStation State of Play, PlayStation Showcase, or The Game Awards is anyone’s guess. 2 ​​​​​​​Uncharted 5 To close the PlayStation State of Play, who knows—Naughty Dog has teased that we haven’t seen the last of The Last of Us, and it’d be a huge treat for fans of the post-apocalyptic franchise to know with certainty that there is officially more to come. However, it’s far likelier that Naughty Dog will not move The Last of Us from its back burner, whether or not there is any heat beneath it, for two reasons: firstly, between The Last of Us Part II and the second season of HBO’s The Last of Us, the franchise is volatile and divisive right now; and secondly, for a while now, there have been rumors and hints that Naughty Dog is resuscitating one of its most beloved IPs, Uncharted. It’d certainly take some heat off of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and The Last of Us if fans’ attention was drawn to speculation about a new Uncharted game, let alone Uncharted 5. Because Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is supposedly the next Naughty Dog game that’ll be released, an Uncharted 5 PlayStation State of Play announcement could even be cheeky and reveal nothing about who its lead protagonist(s) will be, or when it’ll take place in the franchise’s timeline. It’d make sense if Naughty Dog’s Shaun Escayg-led game turns out to be Uncharted 5, and announcing it with a brief teaser following a larger Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet trailer at this week’s PlayStation State of Play would propel Naughty Dog back into the stratosphere of excellence and excitement that the developer belongs in. 1 Bugsnax 2 It’s been six years since Bugsnax was released as a launch title for the PlayStation 5 in November 2020, and it seems as if it’s only a matter of time until we hear official word about a sequel. Bugsnax 2 might not be everyone’s most highly anticipated reveal for a PlayStation State of Play showcase, but Bugsnax had a strong outing as an incredibly unique and charming PS5 game. The IP has limitless potential with its novel and endearing food/animal amalgamations, with fans now able to purchase plushies and other Bugsnax merchandise from Fangamer. Of course, because Young Horses hasn’t put out a sequel yet, it might be quite momentous if it’s instead choosing to wait a bit longer and repeat the past by making Bugsnax 2 a next-gen console launch title, this time for the PlayStation 6. Indeed, PlayStation may be barreling toward the next generation of consoles in the next year or two. PlayStation possibly announced its plans for an all-digital future commencing in January 2028 as early as it did in order to mentally prepare users for a fully discless PS6 in that ballpark.
