PS Plus Extra and Premium members can now access a special edition of Tales of Arise, Bandai Namco’s acclaimed action JRPG, without purchasing it separately. As of October 27, the game is now available with the subscription service for PlayStation 5 and 4 in the US, UK, and Japan. The release is part of a wider monthly lineup that also includes Mafia: The Old Country and Horizon Forbidden West. Tales of Arise Received a 9/10 From Critics Originally released in September 2021, Tales of Arise earned strong reviews for its combat, characters, and presentation. The game holds an 87 Metacritic score, based on 76 critic reviews across its original release. That reception makes it a notable addition to the PS Plus library, especially for players who missed the RPG when it first launched. As for the plot, Tales of Arise takes place on Dahna, a planet whose people have endured 300 years of oppression under the neighboring world of Rena. Players follow Alphen and Shionne, two people from opposing backgrounds who join forces to challenge the system governing their worlds. Combat is a major part of the experience. Battles combine real-time action with character-specific abilities, allowing players to switch between party members and coordinate attacks against enemies. The colorful environments and anime-inspired presentation also help distinguish it from more traditional, turn-based JRPGs. The Beyond the Dawn Edition Isn't The Same As The Original Tales of Arise Note that the version of Tales of Arise joining PlayStation Plus is not simply the original game. It’s the Beyond the Dawn Edition, which includes the expansion of the same name that takes place a year after the events of the main story. The Beyond the Dawn chapter follows the characters as they deal with the consequences of the conflict between Dahna and Rena. It introduces new challenges and gives players more time with the original cast. The edition also includes additional DLC, making it a convenient starting point for newcomers who want the expanded package. Players should keep the game’s length in mind before jumping in. The main adventure can take dozens of hours, depending on how much optional content they complete, while the expansion adds another substantial chapter. It should take around 90 hours (70 for the main story, and 20 for the expansion) for you to finish this one, but completion time will vary depending on your pace and choices. How to Play Tales of Arise on PS Plus Eligible PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers can find Tales of Arise: Beyond the Dawn Edition in the Game Catalog and download it on their PS5 or PS4 consoles. Note that Essential subscribers don’t have access to the monthly game catalog, so they’d have to upgrade to an eligible tier to add Tales of Arise to their Plus libraries. Also, it’s not really a free-to-keep game. You’d need to be subscribed to an eligible tier to continue playing it. For anyone who enjoys character-driven stories and fast-paced RPG combat, Tales of Arise now offers PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers a substantial adventure to enjoy without an additional game purchase.
