He still quite hasn’t gotten out of his mid 00’s emo phase, and knows more about The Legend of Zelda and Doctor Who than is probably healthy. Ewan oversees the content operation of ScreenRant's gaming output, working with a talented team of writers and editors to cover everything from the latest GTA 6 news to the indie games you need on your radar. Former Editor of GAMINGbible, Ewan also has words at Kotaku, Den of Geek, NME, and UNILAD. He's appeared on various podcasts, including VGC's and BBC's Let's Talk About Tech. The PlayStation 2, of course, is one of the greatest consoles of all time, and remains the best-selling hardware platform to this day. With such a huge library, it's not a huge surprise that it managed to become one of the best consoles for RPGs, offering up some of the most iconic and genre-defining releases of the early-to-mid 00s. If you have a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, you may care to know that one of the very best RPGs of the PS2 generation is currently free with the subscription service. Better yet, it still completely holds up in 2026. Don't believe me? Go play it for yourself and out. The PlayStation 2 Never Missed When it comes to PS2 RPGs, the bar is pretty damn high. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King is still a complete masterpiece. Then there are some of the best Final Fantasy games ever made on the console. Of course, Square Enix aren't the only studio that makes RPGs, and there's one turn-based PS2 game that has never really had the love it deserves. The PlayStation Plus library of PS1 and PS2 games isn't what it should be given how much a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription costs, but there are still some great games to be found there. One such game is the wonderful Rogue Galaxy. Developed by Level-5 (Ni no Kuni, Professor Layton), this 2005 sci-fi RPG remains, to my mind, a genuine 10/10 masterpiece. It's also managed to age beautifully, which is a rare feat for games of that era. A big part of how the game managed to age so well should come as little surprise: the wonderful, timeless cel-shaded art style. Much like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Rogue Galaxy's decision to go for a cartoon aesthetic over something more realistic has ensured it still looks incredible today. Its huge galaxy, which is made up of multiple planets, also remains a delight to explore. Rogue Galaxy also delivers an epic tale with a wonderful cast of characters, which tends to be key for any good RPG. It wears its Star Wars influences on its sleeve, too. The game begins with a young farmer who becomes entangled in a galactic conflict, and ultimately becomes responsible for the fate of the cosmos. Definitely seen that somewhere before. If you're looking for a sci-fi RPG that offers more fantasy elements, Rogue Galaxy is one of the best choices out there. It's much, much less serious and gritty than something like Mass Effect, but still able to deliver an emotional punch when it has to. The only real thing to remember is that this is a two-decade-old game, and even while it's largely aged well, there are some rough edges. If you can roll with those punches, though, you'll get a brilliant 40-hour adventure in return. Not bad at all, right?
