A Delta passenger reports being told by a flight attendant that he’d taken her picture while she was sleeping, and that he might post it on Facebook. She reacted in disbelief, and says other flight attendants laughed. Then he brought up Facebook again. Tasia Jewel had just arrived in Mexico City and checked into her hotel when she shared the story. She’d been at the Formula One race in Austin, stayed in Texas rather than going home, and was exhausted. She slept for about an hour and a half or so on the roughly three-hour flight. Then she got to the aircraft door. She says three or four male flight attendants were standing there saying goodbye to passengers. One told her: Hey, yo friend, I took a picture of you while you were sleeping. She responded, “What?” Yeah, I might just post it on Facebook. She says the other crewmembers laughed with one adding, “Yeah, she was knocked out.” And the first flight attendant repeated, “You might see it on Facebook.” Here’s her account, flagged by Paddle Your Own Kanoo: Watch Tasia Jewel’s account on TikTok The woman acknowledges he could have been joking. She also says she hadn’t spoken to him at all on the flight. My first reaction was that, while Delta has built up its Austin flying, they don’t actually operated Austin – Mexico City. But in a follow-up video she says she flew from Dallas to Atlanta to Mexico City with the flight in question being Delta 602. She says she chose Delta’s Boeing 757 because she didn’t want the Aeromexico Boeing 737 MAX. And she reports that Delta responded well to her complaint. Her original video caption said she’d filed a complaint. In later replies, she reports a phone call, an apology and an investigation. I guess what matters here was whether there was a fundamental breach or a bad joke. Either way, she says she felt unsafe. I’ve written about a sleeping passenger who said a man photographed her, where the crew intervened and police met the flight. Here, the person allegedly taking the photos was an employee she was supposed to go to for help. And last year I covered a flight attendant who caught a passenger secretly filming her and sending her image to someone else. It’s easy to understand why that bothered her. But a passenger can have the same objection when the roles are reversed. I don’t want a ban on taking pictures inside an aircraft. Passengers need to be able to document how they’re treated. Delta’s customer photography guidance recognizes that people take photos and videos, while asking them to avoid interfering with safety and to be “respectful in your intent” when including employees. Employees ought to show customers that same consideration. Topics on this page
