Andrew Savage has a new band. The Parquet Courts member, sometimes known to release solo joints under the name A. Savage, has launched Iconic Fugues today with debut single "2025 Dream/2025 Blues." It's a shuffling folk-rock track that technically encompasses two songs' worth of lyrics, though it plays as one seamless six-minute piece.A word from Savage, who is now based in Marseille:Two songs in one! Really it’s just about a guy who wakes up from a dream only to be confronted with a series of increasingly consequential, harsh realities. It’s a blues song where the grievances range from petty to dire. It was written in 2025, as you’d imagine, but nearly everything I sing about is still very much on my mind. As I write this all out it sounds bleak, but I don’t find it to be a bleak song. I think it’s just amazing the way a fun guitar solo can draw a bit of sun out from behind the clouds.Listen below.A few days ago Savage introduced Iconic Fugues in an interview with journalist Shaad D'Souza's Instagram-based magazine. D'Souza reveals that Iconic Fugues have a debut album called Sister Uncertain in the queue. In the interview, Savage says this is the first set of songs he's written since moving from New York to France, though 2023's A. Savage record Several Songs About Fire was recorded after the move. He decided Iconic Fugues should have its own band name because it feels like a band to him and it has its own distinctive aesthetic, separate from his other work. Drummer Dylan Hadley, who is in Sharpie Smile and who played on the last A. Savage album, is in the band. So is Santiago Aldunate of the psych band Hantayo, who runs the L'Alarme dance party and fanzine with Savage. Savage also discusses his move to Europe, the earnestness of his latest lyrics, and why Marseille now reminds him of Brooklyn when he moved there in 2009. It's a good read!
