Paramount+'s New Yellowstone Confirmed By Taylor Sheridan Casting

Paramount+ and Taylor Sheridan have found their new Yellowstone thanks to a major casting announcement for a returning series. Though it has been nearly two years since the ending of Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan isn't hurting for shows to hang his hat on. Between Lioness, Tulsa King, The Madison, and more, Sheridan's shows on Paramount+ consistently break viewership records and receive glowing reviews. Even with all the success of his standalone shows, Sheridan still hasn't found a proper replacement for Yellowstone yet. There are several Yellowstone spinoffs and prequels, most recently Dutton Ranch and Marshals, but even though they feature familiar characters, they don't scratch the same itch for a sweeping, family-oriented neo-Western epic that Yellowstone did. Sheridan's shows are successful, but there's still a Yellowstone-shaped void in his filmography. Now, however, Sheridan seems to have finally found a proper replacement for Yellowstone, and he's using an existing show to do it. Landman wasn't very similar to Yellowstone at the start. They had similar protagonists and neo-Western elements, but Landman very much so felt like it was separate from Yellowstone. As Landman season 3 approaches and more news comes out about the series, however, it's starting to get rid of some of those differences. Landman Season 3’s New Villain Makes The Show Even More Similar To Yellowstone Paramount recently announced that Michael Kelly is joining the cast of Landman season 3, and his new character could bring the entire series more in line with Yellowstone. Kelly, who previously worked on Taylor Sheridan's Lioness, is reportedly playing William Crockett, a wealthy and powerful oil tycoon. More importantly, Crockett is reportedly going to be a rival and antagonist to Tommy and the Norris family's newly formed company, CTT Oil Exploration & Cattle. With Kelly's casting, Landman season 3 is shaping up to follow the same general story format Yellowstone thrived on. Each season of Yellowstone saw John Dutton, the patriarch of the family cattle business, go against a new and powerful villain who was trying to take his land. Now, in Landman season 3, Tommy is the patriarch of the family oil business, and he's about to go up against a new villain who will presumably be trying to muscle him out of the industry and take the leasing and mineral rights to CTT's land. Previously, the general format of Landman was the biggest thing separating it from Yellowstone. Instead of protecting land, generational wealth, and a family business from a new villain each season like John Dutton did, Tommy was basically juggling 30 problems at once and putting out fires for his bosses. Landman seasons 1 and 2 didn't really have a villian, as even Gallino was just another fire Tommy had to keep under control to make M-Tex run smoothly. Now, Landman is switching from having Tommy contend with multiple big problems at once to, presumably, going up against one central antagonist. Michael Kelly's William Crockett is no different from Yellowstone's Dan Jenkins or Sarah Atwood. Like Yellowstone villains of yesteryear, Crockett is positioned to be an antagonist to the Norris family business and their land in Landman season 3. Michael Kelly’s Landman Role May Just Be The Start Of Tommy’s Problems Image via MovieStillsDB Michael Kelly's William Crockett is changing Landman's format, but the new character may just be the start. Christian Wallace already teased that Landman season 3 would be a "reset" for the series, and now that Kelly has joined as an antagonist, the details of that reset are looking clearer. Now that Tommy is building CTT Oil Exploration & Cattle instead of working for M-Tex, the problems he has to face may start looking more like Yellowstone's problems. As previously mentioned, each season of Yellowstone would bring in a new villain to challenge the Duttons and try to take their land in a new way. Landman may follow suit. William Crockett may just be the first villain the Norris family has to battle, while Landman season 4 and beyond could continue introducing new antagonists. Like Yellowstone, those antagonists may also come from different backgrounds. Crockett is a rival oil tycoon, but future villains could be environmentalists, land developers, or anything else Taylor Sheridan can dream up. CTT Oil Exploration & Cattle also opens the door for Landman season 3 to open up new kinds of problems for Tommy. Previously, at M-Tex, Tommy didn't have to make the big gambling decisions. That responsibility fell to Monty and Cami, while Tommy handled the day-to-day. At CTT, there's no one left to pass the buck to. Tommy is going to have to start trusting in his own judgment and making some risky moves to turn CTT into generational wealth for his family. Based on Landman's tone so far, there's no shot all of his gambles pan out.
