Palakkad DMO warns against H1N1 spread

Blood sample positive with H1N1 influenza virus. | Photo Credit: Getty Images The District Medical Officer (DMO) has warned the public to remain cautious against H1N1, a respiratory disease that spreads rapidly through the air due to influenza A virus.High fever, chills, sore throat, cough, running nose, body pain, headache and severe fatigue are its main symptoms.The DMO said the infection spreads when a patient coughs or sneezes and the virus remains in the air, or when a person touches objects used by the patient and then touches the eyes or nose.The disease usually subsides in a few days, but those with breathing difficulty and chest pain should seek treatment at the nearest hospital immediately.Bedridden patients, those with serious illness, pregnant women and children below two years of age should consult a doctor if they have fever or other symptoms, said the DMO.If such high-risk persons are at home, other family members with symptoms should strictly avoid close contact with them, the DMO said.Pregnant women are more prone to infection as immunity is low during pregnancy. The fever can quickly turn into serious lung diseases like pneumonia and can lead to miscarriage and premature delivery. Hence extra care is needed, the officer added.Those with symptoms should drink plenty of water, take rest and should not self-medicate or use antibiotics without a doctor’s advice. People should cover nose and mouth with a handkerchief while sneezing or coughing, wash hands frequently with soap or use sanitiser, and avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. Hands should be washed well after reaching home from outside.Those with symptoms should avoid public places and unnecessary hospital visits. In unavoidable situations and in crowded places, they should wear a mask and keep social distance.
