Steam is home to many co-op games across a wide spectrum of development budgets that have gone viral due to how fun and reproducible their gameplay loops are, such as Overcooked, Phasmophobia, and Lethal Company. It’s anyone’s guess what games will hit and what games will miss nowadays, with plenty of popular multiplayer games only lasting on the shelf for so long anyway, but it’s obviously helpful when a game’s hook is unique. For instance, horror is a genre that is and forever will be grossly saturated, largely because of plentiful asymmetrical horror games like Dead by Daylight, Halloween: The Game, and the upcoming Saw: Genesis. With any luck, Steam’s newest co-op game will be able to ascend to the degree of virality it deserves, as it seems like it could be as engaging and addictive as it is hilarious and ominous, and one of its greatest strengths is somehow being a cocktail of flavorful genres. As per Twitter/X, as well as its Steam store page, developer Happy Volcano and publisher Oro Interactive’s Grave Mistakes was recently announced as an amusing co-op game where players run the Good Mourning Funeral Home, performing services such as “funeral preparations, conducting ceremonies, and of course, embalming.” The twist is that, all the while, the goal is to feed “Grandma,” an eldritch horror that only accepts human body parts. How do you acquire these body parts, then? Well, from the bodies that grieving families are trusting you with and holding you accountable for, of course, and all manner of shenanigans shall transpire as you juggle being a legitimate, professional funeral director/mortician by day, and a servant/cook for Grandma by night. Maybe the most compelling beat in Grave Mistakes is that the gravest mistake players can make in this anxiety-inducing management sim is not feeding Grandma precisely what she asks for, resulting in you or one of your fellow players being munched on instead. The store page describes Grave Mistakes’ core loop and gameplay features as such: Online co-op and proximity chat Run and manage a ‘respectable’ funeral home Chop and clean physics-based bodies Deceive families and avoid raising suspicion Give a eulogy and play the organ at ceremonies Upgrade and improve your funeral home Replace limbs with various items Figure out the mystery behind it all Grave Mistakes gets its charm from how playfully it treats this desecration, with players absurdly having to replace body parts with miscellaneous items such as shovels, skateboards, and basketballs, and hoping that nobody who the body is presented to is the wiser. Plus, fans who are eager to see what Grave Mistakes has in store are welcome to request access to the game’s playtest on Steam before the full release this November. Don't miss out.
