Outgoing Newsom calls for more tax breaks for Hollywood billionaires

California is the most unaffordable state for normal, everyday residents, but Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) is spending his final days in office trying to secure massive tax breaks for Hollywood billionaires.Newsom, who will leave office in January as the state’s term-limited governor (and will almost certainly run for president in 2028), announced he was “proposing the expansion of California’s current Film and Television Tax Credit Program from $750 million to at least $1 billion, and expanding the program as the nation’s largest capped film and TV tax credit.” Newsom’s proposal includes allowing studios to receive a credit for salaries paid to actors. Newsom is also calling on Congress to pass a national tax credit for Hollywood studios to attempt to claw back film and television productions that have gone overseas. Newsom’s final months in office are thus focused on how to help Hollywood billionaires keep more of their own money to make film production more affordable, even as California makes life in the state more unaffordable for nonbillionaire residents through an ever-increasing gas tax and excessive regulations on entire industries. What makes Newsom’s focus on financially aiding Hollywood billionaires even more absurd is that Newsom and state Democrats are the ones who made California toxic for the entertainment industry in the first place. The state’s burdensome union requirements and regulations chased film and television production to states such as Georgia and countries such as the United Kingdom. Actor Rob Lowe famously said it was easier to fly 100 American contestants to Ireland for a game show than to shoot the show in Los Angeles. Rob Lowe blasts lawmakers over how expensive it is to film in Los Angeles:“It is cheaper to bring 100 American people to Ireland than to walk across the lot at Fox, past the sound stages, and do it…It’s criminal what California and L.A. have let happen—it’s criminal. All the while, he continued to spend more money than the state has, causing the state to raise taxes on the peasants who aren’t swimming in Hollywood cash.Newsom ran California based on what was best for left-wing elites because he himself is a left-wing elite. That is how he plans to run the country as well if voters elevate him to the White House in 2028, granting giveaways to his billionaire supporters in Hollywood while leeching money from regular people who are just trying to get by.
