OpenAI launches GPT-6 Astra as the start of what it hopes will be its "AGI era"

OpenAI calls it "the most capable model we have ever broadly deployed," and, somewhat scarily, it's the first AI model to reach "Critical " level when it comes to cybersecurity capability. OpenAI explains what that means in more tangible terms: "This means that, with the right tools and access, GPT-6 Astra can find previously unknown security flaws and develop new ways to exploit them across many well-protected systems without a person guiding each step. Accordingly, we significantly strengthened our protections against the model taking harmful cyber actions, whether that’s due to misuse or misalignment." While OpenAI is keen to show off how mighty its new model is, a considerable amount of the first section is dedicated to the company telling us how it'll keep it from breaking out. It says GPT-6 Astra is "significantly more robust than its predecessors," which means it's a lot harder for people to crack it open and tell it to do things against the terms of use. It's also "better aligned than GPT-5.6 Sol," which means it will keep itself more aligned with OpenAI's safety rules than its prior model. Overall, OpenAI claims that GPT-6 Astra is "significantly safer" than GPT-5.6 Sol in high-risk situations, which is reassuring to hear, given how mighty this new model seems to be. OpenAI seems to believe that this model will be the one to achieve the legendary goal of reaching Artificial General Intelligence, or AGI. This is when an AI begins working and thinking like a human, and has been the holy grail for AI companies ever since LLMs hit the scene. In an interview reported by Wired, OpenAI President and cofounder Greg Brockman says he feels pretty confident: “It’s not unreasonable to feel that we are now in the AGI era. I think that if we fast-forward a couple of years, when we look back and say, ‘When was it really that AGI was created?’ I think it's going to be about this time, and I think it might be about this model."
