The premise may be far weirder than The Martian, but both plots are powered by solving concrete problems using technical knowledge. The practical and mathematical difficulties of propulsion, computation, replication, resource management, and sending intelligence across interstellar distances are all obstacles Bob must overcome. The biggest difference is tone. Mark Watney is one man trying to survive alone; Bob effectively becomes an entire fleet of interstellar probes. The result is lighter and more expansive, but We Are Legion (We Are Bob) delivers the same satisfying combination of science, engineering, and ingenuity that makes The Martian so readable.
