"Every Day Is A Level Up" WARNING: SPOILERS FOR ONE PIECE MANGA CHAPTER #1196The Elbaph arc is showing off a plethora of exciting battles and upgrades for several of One Piece's best characters, including Sanji, whose next evolution isn't only an example of brilliant character writing; it may be a power that even Zoro can't touch. Wano was an arc that pushed each member of the Straw Hat crew further than ever, but the crew's cook is finally getting the type of upgrade that could make him unreachable, while also delivering one of the series' most poignant lessons. Throughout One Piece's many arcs, that range from masterpiece to forgettable, a special formula has become apparent. When Luffy and his crew arrive on a new island, they befriend some of its inhabitants, learn of a threat to themselves or the people that helped them, then they normally fight against a group of oppressors. The Elbaph arc is deep into that exciting conflict, where our protagonists are pushed to their limits, forced to surpass them, and show readers something new. And Sanji is about to pull off something people have waited years to see. The Straw Hats are facing foes that can regenerate from any attack, except for those imbued with Conqueror's Haki. While Zoro has accidentally used that type of power in the past, Sanji has not previously shown such abilities. But One Piece chapter #1196 included considerable signs of that changing in a way that's very different from Zoro's recent progress. Sanji's Upgrade Comes From A Valuable Lesson In Self Love Both Zoro and Sanji are getting closer to Luffy's level with power-ups that will greatly help their captain accomplish his dream of becoming the next King of the Pirates. Zoro has learned to better control Conqueror's Haki at will, but Sanji's journey to defeat the God Knight Saint Killingham has forced him to confront his greatest enemy: himself. Many of Sanji's most challenging battles have seen the Straw Hat cook take a lot of damage and even go as far as attempting to sacrifice himself. While many saw it as a sign of devotion to his captain and crew, the Elbaph arc has taken the character's motivations a step further by suggesting that he's been willing to suffer because he has such a low opinion of himself. It's the inevitable result of his extremely abusive and traumatic upbringing at the hands of his father and brothers. But they were no longer his greatest fear. God Knight Saint Killingham's Devil Fruit is arguably one of the strongest and most broken in the One Piece series, with its ability to physically manifest someone's dreams and/or nightmares. Because Sanji has already conquered his complex feelings towards his abusive family, they are no longer his ultimate nightmare. However, the person who challenged the Straw Hat cook to confront his extreme lack of self-esteem replaced them. During Sanji's personal training arc during One Piece's timeskip, he was forced to improve his skills in Kamabakka Kingdom, under the rule of Emporio Ivankov. The flamboyant revolutionary noticed that during Sanji's training, he often took damage he could have easily dodged and challenged him to confront his lack of self-preservation and to love himself more. It had been a problem for most of Sanji's life, but now that the important lesson is no longer repressed, he can finally reach his full potential. Zoro Can't Do What Sanji Can Do Each Straw Hat crewmember has contributed valuable skills that have helped them become one of One Piece's most successful pirate groups. Zoro's considerable strength and Luffy's ability to effectively use all types of Haki have been extreme assets. While it seems like Sanji is finally starting to think like a conqueror for the first time in the series, he's previously shown extreme skill in using Observation Haki. His extreme awareness has helped him find female crewmates from long distances and even allowed him to sense and dodge an assassination attempt during his fake wedding on Whole Cake Island. During the incredible final pages of One Piece chapter #1196, Sanji declared to Saint Killingham that he would not suffer any more damage, and his extreme skills with Observation Haki can help do that, especially if they’ve been improved. Zoro's skill set is almost the opposite, especially with his humorous lack of direction. But time will tell how untouchable Sanji's latest upgrade will make him, and if both the left and right wings of the future Pirate King will be successful in their battles against One Piece's corrupt World Government.
