Oman wins bid to host the 23rd World Wind Energy Congress

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman has won the right to host the 23rd World Wind Energy Conference (WWEC 2027), marking a significant step in the country’s renewable energy development and supporting its efforts to expand wind energy projects and diversify its energy mix.The event will be hosted by Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (PWP) under the patronage of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, in cooperation with the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA). The conference will provide an opportunity to showcase Oman’s progress in wind energy projects and highlight investment opportunities in the sector. The conference will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, investors, developers, researchers, technology providers and renewable energy experts from around the world to discuss the future of wind energy, showcase projects and technologies, explore investment opportunities, and promote international cooperation and knowledge exchange.Mohsin bin Hamad Al Hadhrami, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, said Oman’s hosting of WWEC 2027 reflects international confidence in the country’s vision and its progress in developing the renewable energy sector, in line with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040.He noted that the Ministry is working to develop a more diversified and flexible energy mix, enhance energy security, and create a supportive regulatory and investment environment for the expansion of renewable energy projects.He added that Oman’s renewable energy project roadmap through 2032 includes around 19 solar and wind energy projects and project packages, comprising 13 solar projects and packages and six wind energy projects. The planned total wind energy capacity exceeds 4,000 megawatts, reflecting the scale of expansion targeted in the coming phase.Al Hadhrami explained that the expansion goes beyond adding new electricity generation capacity to building an integrated ecosystem that attracts investment and technology, develops value chains and local content, strengthens infrastructure readiness, and develops national capabilities and expertise. These efforts will enhance the economic value, competitiveness and long-term sustainability of the energy sector.He further noted that hosting the conference will provide an international platform for exchanging knowledge and expertise, facilitating technology transfer, supporting innovation, and building partnerships that contribute to accelerating the development of wind and renewable energy in Oman.For her part, Maitha Saif Al Mahrouqi,, Ambassador of Oman to the Federal Republic of Germany, welcomed the confidence placed in Oman by the World Wind Energy Association and its partners in selecting the Sultanate to host WWEC 2027.She said the decision confirms Oman’s position as a reliable partner for investment and international cooperation, supported by an established approach based on stability, dialogue and bridge-building, as well as a transparent regulatory environment and frameworks supporting the acceleration of renewable energy projects from planning to generation.She noted that Oman has promising wind energy resources, alongside large-scale solar energy projects, supporting the development of a diversified and flexible energy mix while enhancing national competitiveness and energy security.The ambassador stressed that the energy transition requires international cooperation, knowledge exchange and cross-border partnerships, adding that Oman’s position enables it to serve as a link between the Gulf region, East Africa, South Asia and Europe, connecting capital with opportunities and innovation with implementation.Ahmed bin Salem Al Abri, Chief Executive Officer of Nama Power and Water Procurement Company, said Oman’s successful bid to host WWEC 2027 represents international recognition of the country’s progress in renewable energy and its achievements under Oman Vision 2040 and its net-zero ambitions.He explained that PWP prepared Oman’s hosting bid under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, noting that the successful bid was supported by Oman’s strategic location, attractive investment environment, advanced infrastructure and promising wind resources.These factors, he said, position Oman to become a regional hub for developing wind energy projects and broader energy-transition initiatives. He highlighted Dhofar and Al Wusta Governorates in particular as promising areas for utility-scale wind energy projects, offering opportunities to attract international developers, technology providers and investors.Al Abri added that the conference will provide an international platform to showcase these capabilities and opportunities, strengthen international cooperation and accelerate the development of wind and renewable energy projects, contributing to energy-transition objectives at both the national and global levels.Dr. Irfan Mirza, President of the World Wind Energy Association, said the association welcomed Oman’s hosting of the 23rd World Wind Energy Conference in 2027.He noted that Oman will provide an ideal platform bringing together governments, industry, investors, experts and communities from around the world, expressing his anticipation of working closely with the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, PWP and WWEA partners in Oman to make WWEC 2027 a truly global platform for strengthening partnerships, accelerating the deployment of wind energy projects and translating shared ambitions into concrete actions and projects.Stefan Gsänger, Secretary-General of the World Wind Energy Association, expressed his appreciation for Oman’s comprehensive plans to expand renewable and wind energy projects.He said WWEC 2027 would support these ambitious efforts, building on the legacy of the conference’s previous 22 editions. For the first time, the global wind energy community will convene in the Arabian Gulf, opening new prospects for sustainable and peaceful development across the region.
