Oman joins global hydrogen partnership, strengthening green hydrogen ambitions

Muscat: Oman has joined the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy, marking a significant step in its efforts to strengthen its role in the global hydrogen sector and accelerate the development of green hydrogen and related technologies.Represented by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, Oman’s membership will expand cooperation with partner countries and provide access to international expertise in hydrogen policies, regulatory frameworks, technical standards and safety requirements. The partnership focuses on advancing hydrogen and fuel-cell technologies and promoting their use across sectors including transportation, industry, power generation and energy storage.Oman’s accession is also aligned with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040, particularly economic diversification, innovation and sustainability. It is expected to support the development of integrated green hydrogen value chains and strengthen links between Omani projects and international markets.The membership will enable Oman to participate in international research and development programmes, innovation initiatives and pilot projects, while supporting capacity-building and the development of specialised national skills required for the emerging hydrogen economy.Minister of Energy and Minerals Salem bin Nasser Al Aufi described the accession as an important milestone in Oman’s journey towards establishing a competitive global green hydrogen economy.He said Oman seeks to contribute actively to international efforts to drive innovation, strengthen cooperation and develop the policies and standards needed to create a resilient and sustainable global hydrogen market.Paulo Emilio Valladao de Miranda, President of the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy, welcomed Oman’s membership, describing the country’s renewable energy potential, ambitious low-emission hydrogen plans and focus on large-scale production and exports as valuable additions to the partnership.He said Oman could contribute expertise in infrastructure, international markets, policies and standards as countries work to build a resilient global hydrogen economy.Dr. Laurent Anthony, Executive Director of the partnership, said Oman’s accession strengthens the organisation through the country’s substantial renewable energy potential, ambitious hydrogen programme and focus on developing the capabilities and regulatory frameworks required for a new industry.He said the partnership looks forward to facilitating the exchange of expertise between Oman and other members, particularly in addressing common challenges related to infrastructure, standards, skills and international hydrogen markets.Oman’s membership comes as the Sultanate continues efforts to harness its abundant solar and wind resources to develop a competitive green hydrogen industry, support carbon-neutrality ambitions and increase the contribution of clean energy to the national economy.The move also strengthens Oman’s efforts to position itself as a regional and international hub for hydrogen production, its derivatives and associated industries, while creating opportunities for technology development, investment and specialised employment.
