Nobel Prize in Literature goes to Canadian author Anne Carson

Anne Carson has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for the year 2026. The 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature is awarded to the Canadian author Anne Carson, “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature,” the Swedish Academy, Stockholm, said on Thursday (October 8, 2026).Anne Carson published a series of notable works in the 1990s. Throughout her entire authorship, Carson with a light touch explores the possibilities of writing, a process by which the literary sketch has become of particular value to her.Among these is ‘The Glass Essay’ in ‘Glass, Irony, and God’ (1995), which demonstrates the potential of the long poem where genre boundaries are seen to blur.‘The Beauty of the Husband: A Fictional Essay in 29 Tangos’, published in 2001, tells of a cutting and sardonic row with a deceitful husband, its 29 episodes each opening with lines of verse by the romantic poet John Keats. Keats’s sublime words about beauty being truth are, in brutal yet playful fashion, juxtaposed with this exhausting relationship drama.Born in 1950 in Toronto, Canada, Carson published her doctoral thesis in Classics entitled ‘Odi et Amo Ergo Sum’ in 1981 and has, throughout her entire career, combined poetry writing with translation work and teaching at various universities.Almost all her literary production has centred upon the intersection between the philologist’s obsession with words and the poet’s desire for new meaning. She has herself identified the etymology of words as the starting point for all her work.Last year, the Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai for his works on “apocalyptic terror.”The announcement of medicine Nobel kicked off the Nobel announcement week. Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel have been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries leading to a technique called optogenetics, which allows scientists to control select nerve cells using light.Belgian-American particle physicist Francis Halzen is the recipient of Physics Nobel for his contributions to IceCube, a neutrino observatory in the South Pole, and for the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry was given to Henri Kagan and Kenso Soai for untangling mysterious mirror images in molecules, a discovery that has been used to develop countless drugs. The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced tomorrow (October 9, 2026). The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences, popularly known as Economics Nobel will be announced on October 12.The winners will get a cash award of 12 million Swedish kronor (about $1.2 million). The award will be presented on December 10, the Nobel Prize day, also the death anniversary of Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who in his will dictated that his estate should be used to fund “prizes to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind”.
