INQUIRER FILES PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur – The Philippines Mobile Da’wah and Charity Association (PMDCA) has appealed to the Department of Education (DepEd) Zamboanga del Sur Schools Division to stop scheduling school activities during weekends, citing the welfare of Muslim learners and their families. In a letter addressed to Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Ma. Judelyn Ramos on Monday, Sept. 7, PMDCA President Sheikh Aczah Alim said Saturdays and Sundays are vital for Muslim students’ religious, cultural, and family life. According to Alim, Muslim learners dedicate weekends to Arabic classes, which are essential for their spiritual and cultural education, while others use the time to help their families earn income. The group also raised concerns over recent incidents of violence in schools, including shootings, which they believe are partly rooted in the lack of parental guidance and bonding time. “Weekends provide a vital chance to nurture these connections and prevent such unfortunate outcomes,” Alim stressed. The PMDCA expressed hope that DepEd would heed the request, saying the measure would contribute to the holistic development of Muslim learners by balancing academic responsibilities with spiritual growth. “We sincerely hope for your understanding and support on this matter. Your cooperation will greatly contribute to the holistic development of our students, respecting both their academic responsibilities and their spiritual growth,” he said./coa Your subscription could not be saved.
