A small town is under attack from a Lovecraftian sea monster in Below. Netflix's new six-episode limited thriller series is centered on Calvin Penney (Josh Hartnett), a stubborn fisherman haunted by the death of his father, who died under mysterious circumstances decades ago. When a sea monster starts terrorizing the small Newfoundland town where Calvin lives, he sets out to protect his son, Wade Penney (Charlie Heaton), and the rest of the family, while joining forces with visiting marine researcher Fonda Howander (Mackenzie Davis). Ahead of the show's world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Netflix has released an official new trailer for Below, which gives the closest look yet at the sea monster. The footage opens with a flashback to young Calvin noticing something unusual in the water before his father's death. In the present day, the Penney family are happily reunited, but their time together quickly takes a dark turn when an iceberg appears in the water. Check out the trailer below: As the trailer continues, numerous boats approach the iceberg while being told not to approach it. Wade is nearly thrown overboard due to the monster's movements, and as the town's citizens descend into madness, Calvin realizes he doesn't understand the water as well as he thought. The exact nature of the sea monster is a mystery, but it seems reminiscent of the types of creatures written about by H.P. Lovecraft. Beyond its wild and terrifying creations, Lovecraftian horror is rooted in what cannot be known or understood by the human mind. The deep-seated fear of the unknown is present throughout the Below trailer, as Calvin struggles to confront what he never understood about his father's death and what is happening to the town now. In addition to Harnett as Calvin, Heaton as Wade, and Davis as Fonda, the cast features Ruby Stokes as Mary Penney, Kaleb Horn as Noah, Rohan Campbell as Jay Penney, and Willow Kean as Ruth Penney. For many of the actors, this is not their first Netflix project, with prior credits including Harnett as David Ross in Black Mirror, Heaton as Jonathan Byers in Stranger Things, Davis as Martha Kelverson in Love, Death + Robots, Stokes as Francesca Bridgerton in Bridgerton, Horn as Gilles in Locke & Key, and Campbell as Lonergan in Virgin River. Below was created by Jesse McKeown, who also serves as the showrunner and an executive producer, and previously worked as a writer and producer on Netflix's The Umbrella Academy. Additional executive producers are Hartnett, Jessica Rhoades, Chris Hatcher, Jamie Childs, Louise Sutton, and Sharon Hall. To help bring the setting of the show to life, the show was filmed on location in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. All Below episodes will be released on Netflix on October 8.
