Hazbin Hotel had a storied journey to the small screen, beginning as a YouTube pilot by Vivienne Medrano that debuted in 2019. The pilot racked up tens of millions of views before production companies A24 and Bento Box picked it up, and it premiered on Prime Video in 2024. The series, an explicit musical black comedy, centers on the plucky princess of Hell, Charlie Morningstar (Erika Henningsen), who uses her titular hotel as a rehabilitation center to redeem sinners so they can be accepted into heaven. This inventive premise has united typically disparate subcultures, from musical theater lovers to die-hard animation fans, earning GLAAD nominations and over a billion Spotify streams for its soundtrack. With season 2 airing in 2025, Hazbin Hotel has seen such a streaming success that Prime Video renewed it for three additional seasons, with season 5 being its last. Though not an exact Hazbin Hotel replica, Netflix has a similar comedy series: Haunted Hotel. Created by Rick and Morty and Community writer Matt Roller and executive produced by Dan Harmon, Haunted Hotel premiered on Netflix in 2025. After two seasons and with Haunted Hotel season 3 officially confirmed, the Netflix show may not have reached the pop culture heights of its Prime Video competitor, but it beats Hazbin Hotel in one major way. Haunted Hotel Has A Similar Premise To Hazbin, But Better Rotten Tomatoes Scores Beyond titles that could easily be mistaken for one another, Hazbin Hotel and Haunted Hotel have rather similar premises. In Haunted Hotel, single mom Katherine Freeling (Eliza Coupe) moves to upstate New York with her two children, where she becomes the reluctant owner of the Undervale Hotel. Things hit a snag when Katherine discovers that the hotel is full of zany undead spirits, including her deceased older brother Nathan (Will Forte), all of whom refuse to check out. While both shows follow lovable women in over their heads trying to corral a bunch of ghosts into doing what's right (or at least paying their hotel bill), Haunted Hotel and Hazbin Hotel differ fundamentallyin tone. Haunted Hotel is a dysfunctional family sitcom with a supernatural twist, while Hazbin Hotel is a full-on musical extravaganza. Hazbin Hotel's massive fandom is entirely thanks to its inventiveness, but this may be why it has a slightly lower Rotten Tomatoes score than Haunted Hotel: 85% compared to Haunted Hotel's 89%. Take this with a grain of salt, since Hazbin Hotel has twice as many reviews on the aggregator site as Haunted Hotel, but it still reinforces that a fresh take on the familiar will almost always get more praise than a wild swing—even if it's a hit. How Haunted Hotel & Hazbin Hotel Compare To Third Sibling Series, Helluva Boss Image via Prime Video If Haunted Hotel and Hazbin Hotel don't give you enough of a supernatural adult animated series fix, there's also Helluva Boss. A Hazbin Hotel spinoff, Helluva Boss focuses on another business: Immediate Murder Professionals, aka I.M.P. Run by literal imps, I.M.P. is an assassination company that carries out hits on the living on behalf of vengeance-seeking sinners. Choose the movie with the higher Rotten Tomatoes score. As it's also created by Medrano and takes place in the same universe as Hazbin Hotel, expect the same rousing musical numbers and even darker humor. However, Helluva Boss is actually more similar to Haunted Hotel in that, rather than having a sweeping serialized narrative like Hazbin Hotel, it's much more episodic, focusing on the day-to-day pains of running a business, albeit a very unconventional one. No matter which series is your favorite, it's a helluva good time to be an animation fan.
