Netflix Officially Reveals Josh Hartnett’s New Supernatural Sea-Monster Thriller Series

With a mind like a steel trap, he's an endless fount of movie and TV trivia, borne from a misspent youth of watching monster movies on TV, perusing the sun-faded goods at the local video rental shop, and staining his fingers with ink from the Video Movie Guide. Just in time for spooky season, a new horror series is surfacing on Netflix. Josh Harnett stars in the new miniseries Below, which sees a seaside Canadian town terrorized by a monstrous creature from the deep. Now, we have a new look at the series, but not at its monster, in a new trailer before it premieres on Netflix next month. The new series comes from Jesse McKeown, a Canadian writer who's worked on series like The Umbrella Academy, Letterkenny, and The Sinner. The miniseries consists of six episodes, and will premiere exclusively on Netflix on October 8. However, if you want an early look at the series, it will make its big-screen premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this month. In the trailer, Hartnett stars as Calvin Penney, a fisherman from a remote Newfoundland town who's seeing his way of life disappear. He's still haunted by his father's mysterious death at sea, but at first it all appears to be fun and games, as a newcomer to Newfoundland is welcomed in a "screeching-in" ceremony, taking a shot of local rum before kissing a codfish to the soothing sounds of Canadian troubadour Gordon Lightfoot's "Sundown." However, there's something strange going on, as a mysterious iceberg drifts into the local harbor. Fonda Howander (Mackenzie Davis, Halt and Catch Fire), a scientist from the mainland, warns the townspeople to stay away, but that may not protect them from what lurks within. Now, Calvin will have to team up with Howander to protect his people and his family, including eldest son Wade (Charlie Heaton, Stranger Things). If they don't, he'll be quoting a different Gordon Lightfoot song: "Fellas, it's been good to know you." The series also stars Joshua Close (Fargo), Rohan Campbell (Halloween Ends), Ruby Stokes (Bridgerton), and native Newfoundlander Natasha Henstridge (Species). What Has Josh Hartnett Been Working on Lately? After a sojourn away from Hollywood stardom, Hartnett made a splashy comeback in Christopher Nolan's explosive biopic Oppenheimer, and followed that up with a showy turn as a cornered serial killer in M. Night Shyamalan's Trap. This fall, he'll star alongside Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson in the erotic thriller Verity, a much-anticipated Colleen Hoover adaptation. He will also star alongside Willem Dafoe and Michael Douglas in White Lies, Oliver Stone's first narrative feature in a decade. All six episodes of Below will premiere on Netflix on October 8.
