Sign in to your TheGamer account While it seems like just about every gaming franchise is susceptible to getting a sudden movie or TV adaptation these days, one that definitely wasn't on our bingo cards this year was PUBG Battlegrounds. Coming just hours after announcing the Kickstarter for their own trading card game, it was revealed that Netflix has started developing a new live-action series based on the iconic battle royale that started the genre. According to Variety who broke the news, the show itself will not only be starring the actor and musician Donald Glover, but he'll also be directing and writing the show with the help of his brother Stephen Glover. A Surprising Announcement For The Studio via PUBG Corp Although the breakout shooter's gameplay doesn't have much of an ongoing story to borrow from, with a simple gameplay loop of dropping into a deserted island and being the last one standing, the absence of a conventional narrative does leave more room for a unique adaptation similar to the Minecraft or Super Mario Bros. movies. Despite the announcement itself coming as a complete surprise, this is far from the first time Donald Glover has directed and starred in a major project, with the creator having achieved plenty of success with projects like Atlanta alongside 2024's Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Joining the likes of Arcane, The Witcher, Devil May Cry, and more for Netflix's gaming adaptation push, the PUBG show is also being produced by several executives from Krafton, Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee, who help maintain the company that developed the game to this day. The World Of PUBG Is Getting Bigger After getting over the shock of the initial reveal, it also makes more sense considering the sheer popularity and genre-birthing success of PUBG, which is still going strong overseas and raking in "hundreds of thousands of active users daily," as noted by Variety. While PUBG has received regular support and updates more geared towards its eastern player base with gacha mechanics and K-pop crossovers, the TCG and TV series both come after the announcement of the official roguelite spinoff PUBG: Ded.Net, which doesn't currently have a release date just yet, but solidifies that the franchise is far from over despite its weaker western popularity.
