Every effort will be made so that Suhail Sajeev, who was charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder after he recklessly drove a luxury car and fatally rammed it into a two-wheeler leading to the death of three youth, gets the maximum punishment, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said in New Delhi on Tuesday (October 13, 2026).The accident occurred at the airport road here early on Sunday (October 11) morning when Suhail was reportedly driving the car in an inebriated condition.Dismissing the allegations of the victims’ family members that attempts have been made to scuttle the probe into the case, Mr. Chennithala said such concerns were natural. He said someone was apparently trying to mislead them. The police, the prosecution and the government would make all efforts so that the driver of the car gets the maximum punishment as the extremely distressing accident had shaken Kerala’s conscience, the Minister said.On concerns that Suhail was remanded to the Borstal School and not to jail, Mr. Chennithala said that it was the court concerned that sent him there. Rule 279 of ‘jail rules’ (the Kerala Prisons and Correctional Services (Management) Act) speaks of how offenders aged below 21 years ought to be sent to such a detention centre. He added that the accident case showed the relevance of the anti-drug campaign that was launched recently in Keralam.
