NASA and its commercial partners are making progress on their way to a permanent human presence on the Moon. As part of that, a recent press release and accompanying YouTube video hints they may be looking to provide regular updates to the progress of those efforts - and, at least for this first one, that progress looks pretty good. The press release and video focuses on lunar lander missions planned by five different companies, each of which is trying to bring something unique to NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Service (CLPS). First up is Blue Origin, whose Blue Moon MK1 is currently undergoing its integrated test phase. Blue Origin's first mission, dubbed Endurance, just completed environmental testing at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, which included a thermal-vacuum assessment to ensure it can withstand the harsh temperature swings of the lunar environment. Blue Origin also successfully completed communications checks with NASA’s Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System, as well as its Deep Space Network. Next up would be loading the cryogenic propellants onto the lander and some more testing prior to putting the lander on top of a New Glenn rocket, which is hoping to fly again in early 2027. They already have one lunar mission under their belt, and with Blue Ghost Mission 2, they are building more than just a lander. The lander itself will be stacked on type of Elytra, Firefly’s orbital spacecraft (who was hopefully named as a nod to Minecraft’s flying tool), resulting in a system that is 6.7 meters tall. It is aiming to be the first American mission to the far side of the Moon (since China has already successfully landed there), and will both study its geology as well as look into the Cosmic “Dark Ages” by utilizing the near-quiet radio environment to block out noise from Earth - though the mission itself will also include an orbiter that will slightly increase the radio noise on the lunar far side. Intuitive Machines (IM) is on track for their third lunar flight, with their upcoming IM-3 mission. IM-3 will be their third flight of their Nova-C lander (called Trinity). In this case, it will also be carrying Altus-1, the first-ever lunar data-relay satellite. Trinity is currently in its assembly and integration phase, having recently passed thermal vacuum tests at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. Trinity's target will be Reiner Gamma, one of the Moon’s most famous “lunar swirls” - a type of magnetic anomaly that we don’t really have a good explanation for. Between the lander and satellite, the mission will carry five NASA payloads and one payload from the Italian space agency (officially through ESA). Next up is Voyager Technologies, which is building an “infrastructure” class lander intended to move heavy things to the lunar surface. The Griffin-1 lander is slated for a late-2026 launch, and its primary passenger will be Astrolab FLIP (FLEX Lunar Innovation Platform), which will carry another five NASA payloads. Griffin-1 just finished its mass-properties testing, which is crucial to understanding its flight dynamics, and is next on to environmental testing, before returning to PIttsburgh for final assembly and then Cape Canaveral for launch in the next few months. Fraser talks about how metamaterials might help us survive the lunar night, with Prof. Austin Phoenix. The only “legacy” aerospace contractor of the group is Northrupp Grumman, which is planning to develop three distinct technology demonstration payloads to tackle the freezing lunar night. Adapted from the Gateway Space Station’s HALO module, these modified platforms are emblematic of NASA’s increased focus on surface operations rather than orbiting ones. They will demonstrate shared surface power infrastructure, attempting to the survive the “long night” of the lunar surface, while keeping a power grid that might some day supply a crewed human base operational during the deep freeze the night brings. All of this activity is moving towards one collective goal - building a crewed base on the Moon that will serve as a hub for the development of not only the lunar surface, but cis-lunar space as well. After all, the major advantage of the Moon is a combination of its location (i.e. its proximity to Earth) and its significantly lower gravity, which lowers the cost of launching things into orbit. As the infrastructure surrounding our nearest neighbor continues to grow, NASA appears to be more and more willing to rely on commercial partners to help get it there - it remains to be seen how that gamble goes, but it sure feels more reassuring that there are multiple pathways to get there rather than putting all of humanity’s hopes on a base in a single, monolithic, government-backed mission.
